Getting a very young bird or a hand fed bird?

I read this article
Congo and Timnehs' Is There a Difference?
by Jane Hallander sometime back,
but it was after my wife wrote to me yesterday after I
forwarded it to her that I thought of other
ramifications.

Perhaps you should have a look at

shanlung: Getting a very young bird or a hand fed bird?

and catch up with a bit of life in Dubai

May, 2008 - shanlung

I decided against Al Ain after a second drive there.
120km commute so as to have a falcon is a bit too far
a drive.

Very interesting since I have both, Timneh and Congo.

The article on the Greys was very interesting.

I have also been wondering for some time about affects of weaning Greys & other birds, by humans rather than parent raised birds.

Your escapades in Dubai are also very interesting. I was surprised at your interest in Falconry. Having a predator would be a very different situation. Then what do you do when you move? I am kind of relieved you have put the idea aside for now.

Thanks for the updates & Info.

The article was very interesting. I am a firm believer in the use of baby sitting adults for the babies. They need to be birds first, there is so much I can't teach a baby. Even different species nannies does not seem to matter.

Hi from an Internet cafe about 150 meters of steamy sweaty walk from current hotel right in middle of horrendous traffic jams (in case you wonder why I walked, yes, and cars parked to curbs and up on curbs)

Good news is that I signed a lease for an apartment this aftenoon Landlord agreed to my keeping of beasties and he seemed to be entranced with my photos of Tink. He also agreed to my keeping of parrot. I move on their Sunday (which is your Saturday) So perhaps an Ekky is going to come along soon. I still cannot have the thought of having another grey as yet. No need to tell you folks why.

So Grandma, your 'interesting' did not tell us anything from your perspective, unless you just want to remain totally uncomittal. Like your Democrate super delegates not wanting to sway one way or other. I personally like that lady to be in, but heck, I am not even a USA citizen.

Homebird,

You not the only one wondering for a long time. I seen too many chicks (greys and zons) with eyes closed and for sale, not to talk about tiels and others. Pained me to see that. Especially when we know the general level of folks who buy them are not capable of giving them the attention and proper care. Even for the more capable folks like you all. Your very capablity make you cringed from even trying (unless last resort).
I will cringe knowing how unequiped I am. And like you, I want that bird to be primarily a bird who had known the care of his/her feathered mom. And since I am not a bird, I cannot teach that chick he/she is primarily a bird.

I wished I wrote more of Dubai. I will not blame David Gemmell. If anyone here like fantasy novels (historical novels or actually any novels will still be fantasy novels), do read DG. He is just so good. I blame more my new found addiction to chess. I wasted too much time (including 2 hours this evening) on that instead of writing of my time even of the horrendous house searching.

You forgot I had Yingshiong. YS is an insectivore and a predator. But I guess millis and suris were not regarded as prey by you folks. It pained me, (and that video might pain you) to see how YS demolished a gecko lizard. I like geckos, but between Ivan who patrolled the lower ground, and YS who watched the walls, no geckos died naturally death in my apartment during those times.

Ever since I was in Riyadh a couple of years ago, I had thoughts of having falcon. With YS, I found what which was regarded as 'aviary song bird' also was a true sentient bonding with me. I would have accepted falcon as raptors and would keep them true to their nature. I also would have wanted to explore a falcon as companion in truest sense. But as I said, that required a villa, and villa in Dubai will set me back 300k in rent. So sadly, as Al Ain (where cost is less) is too far away, I will not have a falcon.

jessalyn,

There is another photo I just uncovered and which I wanted to use. But I am in Internet cafe and my laptop is in hotel. which wanted to charge 15AED an hour with slow connection against 3 AED in cafe. I will try to upload when I am in office tomorrow.

Tink is the love of my life, especially when I was not thinking of wringing her neck for being such a ***** to me at times.

2horse,

What more can I say, other than to mutilate an old chinese saying.

Cleverness is the ability to do what you can do.
Wisdom is not doing what you know you can do.

You are priceless! I want to write this on my chalkboard! Sounds like you are having an interesting life! Good deal with the landlord! Ruby says "step-up!" ps I taught a goose how to be a goose once! I am not a goose! But, I did an ok job! ha!

I meant to add that my brother will be in Seoul, S. Korea soon. Is that anywhere near you? I am too lazy this am to go find my globe.

I didn't think about the insect & Gecko eating part ... I don't think I'd like the gecko eating part of owning those birds. But handy birds to have a round if those are 'problems'. I used to have cats & I never had mice & even the odd fly was hunted down.

Loved the proverb. Nobody 'listens' to them obviously - or few do. Way too many into doing just what they want & can do.

PS jessalyn - Dubai is in Saudi Arabia, across from Iran - or next to it Dubai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia [you must have seen the excess on the news - those outrageous buildings & the city built in the desert? The money guy, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, behind it is now thinking to make the place Eco friendly - good luck with that when the 'modern' homes etc are all in a desert.....

or is Shanlung elsewhere these days?
