Default Getting To Know Your Flock!

Please share how you decided on the species of your birds, or why you decided to add each of your birds to your flock. Some choose the species and some add for other reasons. Don't hesitate to add PICs!

Dakota was my first bird. I got him because he was the tiel who came over the sit on my hand. I knew nothing about birds at the time, actually, it was probaby the first time I had even heard the word 'cockatiel.'

Mollie came next. He was a rescue, and I raised him from around 4-5 weeks of age.

Then came Ollie. She was actually chosen for the species. I knew I wanted an african grey, but I couldn't decide between congo or timneh. The breeder I 'accidently' came across had a clutch of cags. That is how Ollie came to be!

Mira is the newest addition. She came from Arty (Brokenwing). She's just the sweetest little thing.

Pita choose me. I worked at Petco, and before that would never have thought of owning a Parrot. He came in as a baby, and I & a couple others hand fed him....but it was my job to spoil him rotten. I spent every chance I had in the bird room, and eventually started having him with me all around the store. I was awed by this little bird. I had never held a bird before, or anything. But the more time we spent together, the stronger the bond became, until I decided I couldn't imagine him giving those birdy kisses to anyone else. So I did my research, and then brought him home. The rest is history....lol

Pictures, you said pictures!!! Here's some pics of him when I brought him home.

Most of my birds are rehomes (and one rescue). They didn't have a choice about coming into my house or picking me and I couldn't say no! I don't regret one decision I made. I love them all so much. Despite all the "baggage" they came with, they all learned to love me, too (although my Scarlet has since decided he hates me, but that's okay).

  • I brought two little budgies with me from NJ (left my finches with friends).
  • Next thing you know, I heard a sad story about these finches that a four year old did not love,
  • then the canaries that belonged to Grandpa who had a stroke,
  • then my friend who does dog rescue, said, hey...here are some budgies from the pound
  • then more finches
  • then more budgies
  • then the birds had babies.....
  • then a ring neck from the pound
  • then the tiels from the neighbors cuz my house was already a mess and obviously I would spoil them more than their 8 year old did
  • then the tiels I am babysitting
  • and now maybe a lovebird found in an alleyway this weekend.
(err...I don't have some strange time machine, someone else found the lovebird in an alley and I may get it this weekend..... and I used to be an editor)

I don't really think I had anything to do with collecting this flock, I think they have come looking for me....

just ask anyone, I was a crazy cat woman long before I turned into a crazy bird woman.
