Default Flying Question

So, Jewel is coming up on fledging soon. She keeps jumping off her cage and landing clear across the room on the couch.

My other guys fly around, but unlike the Zons, I dont think Jewel will have enough room to properly manuever, turn, and such....

She loves her harness and my question is are they safe to let them fly around outside in? I feel like I'd be nervous that it would break or something... I know someone, I forget who was talking about attatching an extra lead to the harness line to let tem fly farther.... I use the aviator harness..

Any suggestions would be apreciated.

I would be careful with that but I'd still do it. I read someone with a GreenWing's snapped somehow. Could be the bird chewed it you never know with the internet and how people report things. I forget where I read it....

My free flight trainer guy uses them all the time outside and recommends them on a bird who's learning. His birds including a new flock member travel all over NYC in their harnesses to the park.

PM me I"ll tell you how to reach him if you want. He's in the city.

That was Deb, she does that with her Toos. You may want to talk to her to see exactly what she does. I've thought about possibly doing that with Kita also. But like you I'm kinda afraid to actually do it.

That sounds like a good idea. Does the tension on that type of lead affect their flying at all?

Shanlung has a home made one for his CAG and has posted that it's very light weight. I'm sure it impacts their abilities since it adds weight and constrains them to one side or the other, but still it's a good thing. I'd say it's a good thing IF they get to fly without it like in the house.

Josh what about at your school could you fly her in a gym or auditorium type area?

Josh, I would encourage her to continue with the in-house pre-flight. Practice on recall getting further away every few days. Then, do the same, with the harness, outside. If you feel she wants to do more up...then extend the harness.

Yeah and if shes not on a line she'll fly right up to the rafters and then he'll have to call the fire department to get her down

Josh says to the fireman, "Excuse me sir but my bird is stuck in a tree." comes to mind

I am not saying your suggestion is bad, but I just see soooo much potential for humor in it with my comic book drawings which I have been building the website up for today.

Then maybe the fireman will have to wash the birdie off with the hose set on gentle. This has been done before.

Would you really want to give her that much freedom (in a gym) when it would most likely only be temporary.
