Default Floor Fascination????

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So in all of Eve's 7 years on this planet, he has never been allowed on the floor, and he has always followed this. To the point that if he dropped something that he didn't mean to he would look to me for permission to go and get the item off of the floor. Well for some reason all of this has went out the window. He spends all his time on the floor! I mean all day long, no matter what I have to say about it. He's not causing trouble but rather dropping toys on the floor arranging them in a pile so that he can stand in the middle of it all and just play. No desire to go off wandering the house. I guess that's good! But it is ridiculous, big huge fun play stand is no longer a match for the floor? This is completely out of nowhere, he even takes his food down to the floor? This is very bizarre! And it is not like there is a problem with the stand because at night he prefers to stay on the stand, it's just the day time. Odd Vasa..

That is odd that the fascination happened so suddenly. Any chance his pile of toys are a nest or related to hormones in anyway?

I have a floor dweller here, she loves to play with her toys on the floor as well as go on a walkabout every so often to see if there are any good nest sites available.

I'm starting to wonder about that actually, vasa's like to bury their eggs like reptiles, so it is possiable. And those hormones have just started up again, last year Eve practiced his scatter hording behavior, by stealing rocks out of the plant pots and hiding them in his food dish, this year he is bringing me random objects, (usually a piece of toy that he fancies) as presents. And If I don't graciously accept them, well he get mad and flies around yelling. Such strange parrots these vasa'a are, and every new breeding season brings new behaviors. He has other less desirable behaviors, like "catch the poop" it like a cat trying to chase his tail, but since eve's neck can reach his but without the rest of his body moving....it's try to bite the poop as it fall from his but. Nice.

It is funny & very interesting that your Vasa has these natural instincts. Guess he's growing up. The imagery of him on the floor in a pile of stuff is very sweet. I'm sure he'll continue to enjoy his other areas but this new area is a nice new stimulating environment. [what about wires?]

One day Laker found the floor. He loves shiny things & the legs on my drafting chair called to him. It also has a kind of safe haven quality there & I've walked into the Office & have found him in a corner asleep. Along comes Rio & they race everywhere. He also loves the floor - but it is the floor in the Office only - so far. Rio will hop on my foot while I'm typing & roost. I think this must be a statement of how long I'm on the computer.

I think the floor activities must indicate they are 100% sure its a safe area. The other rooms have dark areas that must worry them a bit.

Maple is a floor dweller too. Just loves to wander around, and I guess me not wanting to believe my baby is growing up...never even considered that she might be looking for a good nesting spot!! (Thanks a lot Karen...LOL!!) I know she is getting more hormonal all the time....gotta get reading up on that.

All the same...floor play can be fun for them, and I agree that it's an indication that they feel very very safe. But yes, it sure can get annoying when they decide they like to wander about, or follow you everywhere.

I get nervous about it, wires, cats.....although the cat just waits for Eve to move so he can have the bird toy. I never allowed Eve on the floor for safety reasons, and he always had no problem with it. SO I might have to compromise for a bit and maybe get him a basket with toys inside of it for the floor. TO help encourage him to not explore the rest of the floor.
