Default The eating perch

Banjo climbed almost out her box so I put her on the eating perch for lunch. The rules of the eating perch are simple, no pushing and shoving, no jumping on the mom. If you want food you better get in the line. Banjo is slow to eat because her mouth can hold more and she eats slower. Tessica and Honey know not to mug each other, all birds get a share. The baby not pictured here was coming down from the top of the cage at the time. I have to enforce the rules in the beginning since it is a little difficult to feed everybirdie before the patience runs out when there is a conure in the cup. They learn fairly quickly that you need to behave with your buddies or you end up on the floor of the cage. Tess and Honey are both weaned a long time ago but the novelty of formula by spoon is a highlight in a busy day.

That's so cute that they're all waiting their turn. I think Tessica and Honey may have their eye on all that food on Banjo's beak, they may not have to wait for the spoon.

Cute photo - you need a bigger feeding perch now!

So this is a routine that you set up for the babies only? Do you set up the perch just for feeding or is is out all the time? Is it outside the cage or in one?

Banjo looks so out of place with the others! Good thing the tail isn't full grown. The IRN looks a bit weirded out by the size difference - if you ask me.

Picking somebirdie beak is not allowed on the perch because it makes the other birdie regurg - this is mugging. Even babies have a reflex that if the corners of the beak are tapped they regurgitate. They clean each other afterwards. They do wait turns it is so cute to see.

The perch is always there since it is the front doorway of the cage and only closed at night. They only use it when formula is around as the entertainment is better in or on the cage. It had to be a place with rules otherwise it turns into a free for all brawl. I have to give the older birds a share of formula because it lets them learn the baby is a flock mate and not be jealous. I may have to re-evaluate the perch when the tail grows.
