Jim -what did you get - the Aloe Vera Detoxifying Formula? If so, I use one capful to two liters of water. I use that as their drinking water for 7 days, but the night change of water is just regular water. You need to refrigerate it. Afer 7 days, go back to your normal routine. I do it every 6 or so months. Mary may have a different suggestion on how to do it. I learned of it from Carolyn Swicegood, one of the links Mary posted. My one Eclectus, who was a rehome, actually had poops that were almost black after about 3-4 days of detoxing her. Of course, she was hooked on birdie valium and was fed a diet of sunflower seeds, hot dogs and popcorn before I got her.

Mary I am so glad you mentioned this. I bought the Lily of the Desert brand and was worried it wasn't the right kind. It does have an extra ingredient in it that the Naturade brand didn't have.

Mary - should I worry that what I ordered on line is going to be outdated? The bottle I have was recently purchased but I just ordered about 4 more bottles on line. Now you have me worried. http://search.store.yahoo.com/cgi-bi....suzannes.com/

What are they detoxing from?

I know that detoxing people is not helpful, why would parrots need that?

From what I understand, it cleanses the liver and kidneys of toxins that build up in their system.

Just curious - why is it not helpful to detox humans?

Well, from what I have heard, for humans, you just eat good food and drink water. The body cleans itself naturally. Colonics, fasting etc are not needed. Sometimes we try to make things hard, when the body can do it's job very well. We just have to feed it well.

With parrots, I just wasn't sure of the need.

what I got today is Lily of the Desert AV80 aloe detox 3 times the strength concentrate. Only thing Whole Foods had. Our local Whole foods is going thru a down sizing of products.

that is interesting. I have not heard before that detoxing people isn't helpful. I may be wrong but I thought using items like this to detox the body where simply to help the body do its job? Like some foods help the immune system, some the heart....

If you only knew what I fed this body..... Maybe it's meant more for those who do not eat properly?

I feel my birds eat properly (better than me anyday). However, I guess Mary can shed some light on this subject and why we should detox our birds. She's very knowledgeable in the holistic department. I am very intrigued by natural and holistic approaches to a bird's health.

Mary?

I do detox on all my birds, as well as suppliment their water with aloe juice when they are doing their heavy molts- usually in the summer. Works wonders on the feathers.
