I use warm water with white vinegar and a good squirt of dish detergent in it for anything in the birdroom.

Mark my routine for disinfecting is; scrub with hot water and a little squirt of dish soap to remove surface organic debris, rinse well, dry in the sun and then disinfect with Vanodine.

Two excellent articles.

Yes, dish detergent is what wild rehabbers use to bathe gulls and other birds that get covered in oil when there are spills in the ocean. It's perfectly innocuous once you rinse it off and even if you don't and the birds get to ingest a bit of it, it won't harm them at all.

Mark, I know you know from being a nurse that there's a difference between disinfect and clean up...so I assume you did mean disinfect not clean. Which I would be disinfecting a bird tree too, especially if it came from a stranger.

For disinfect you'd maybe want to ask your vet for a medical opinion. Wood is notorious for being hard to disinfect. Just like in the human hospital, different disinfectents kill different things and I use the one Karen posted too.

In fact on this thread I started, with a little lecture by a vet for vets about vet exams they mention not to use wooden perches in the vet setting. It was taken from a veterinary conference presentation:

"Wooden - careful with disease transmission - can not easily sterilize wood."

Here's another one from Winged Wisdom for people to narrow down choices above and beyond just cleaning:

LOL edited to add I just saw Feathersnfur8 posted that same link, sorry....we tend to think alike.

No, it's very very clean. I just want to make sure it's disinfected.

Hi Mark,
When I disinfect any of my wood perches etc. I use hot water and dish soap to clean, then I rinse well, and use "Grapefruit Seed Extract" mixed with hot water, then put my wood in the oven at low temp to dry them. I don't know if this will help or not, but it's always what I've done.

I love GSE too. There's so many choices. I have Chlorhexidine on hand too but it's not effective on alot. So if it were me, I'd do my old pet store disinfecting routine which is 10% bleach water solution applied to an already wet surface and sit for 20 minutes. OUTSIDE. Wearing a mask too. And sleeves cuz of wind. Then rinsed about a million times and left to dry in the sun. But it's harsh. I worry about their skin touching it.

Oxy FRESH gel is much less caustic but you're not likely to have that it's only available online. You can read the Winged Wisdom stuff and decide what's best and available to you, too. If you wanted to do it today.
