That's good that you were able to get him in so quickly, Tiffany. Hopefully he'll be somewhat cooperative with you getting him in the carrier. Good luck, and you know our thoughts and prayers will be with you. Let us know what you find out when you can, ok?

I am so happy you were able to get an appointment so quickly. Keep us posted. We'll all be keeping our fingers crossed you get some answers and that whatever it is, it is something easily treated.

He saw me and tried to climb up the cage bars to get out and it took him like 5 minutes to get out of his cage. He was having trouble with his foot not gripping properly and he kept falling. And his personality seems weird. He usually hates me and he let me touch his foot and his feathers. VERY odd. He ate normally and happily rode on my husband's arm all over the house.

My husband thinks he has arthritis because his lack of perches (he is approximatley 4 years old and for the first 3 years of his life he lived in a dog kennel with no perches) in his old home. He has always had trouble with his feet and earlier this year he injured his ankle. The vet told us that his foot may never work correctly again but he seemed to be doing okay with it. But the foot that is acting weird now is the other foot. It just sort of shakes and doesn't latch onto things correctly, he also acts like he has a hard time opening it. I checked and I can't see any swelling. It may be a few days before I can get him to the vet. Does this sound like arthritis to you? Is there anything they can do for arthritis? Or does it sound like another problem all together?

Sorry for the long post.
Is Danny eating enough calcium in his diet? Is he getting daily direct natural sunshine not thru window glass and/or proper F.S. Lighting which we talked about so many times on these boads? Lack of Vitamin D-3 can be a cause of Danny's possible condition..... Is he fully flighted? I'll see what I can find for ya in a birdie medical book or two of mine here.

Ditto Joel. I'd take a list of any supplements and food he gets regularly to help them determine rule ins so you can decide the appropriate testing with them. Besides the physical. Also if he's had previous testing from his regular vet I'd try and get copies faxed to this vet. Good luck tonight.

Joel- He does not get f.s. lighting. His cage is in front of a window and when it is in the cool parts of the year we open up the window to give him light. But with the summer heat it has not been opened for awhile. And he is fully flighted. I know I need to get them lighting.

Certainly sounds possible from what you've described, though. I hope he comes out of it all right.
That is what is sounds like to me as well... Normally, if a bird is arthritic, they won't want to use the limb as much as usual. However, it doesn't just jump over to the other side of the body. I would definatly talk to a vet about it. My vet is wonderful and has done some work with neurological problems.

Also, hsa he been eating normally? You havn't noticed that there 's a lot of food on the bottom of the tray? Does he eat pellets?

They are going to ask if he consumes 85 % pelleted food. That is artifcially supplemented with Calcium and D3 so in theory they allow for no sunlight. That would be a rule in for calcium/D3 which they always assume since it's the most common nutritional issue. If they feel it's that, they will give him emergency treatment and I understand you see an almost immediate response.

Just fyi so you know what to expect. These neuro looking things are tricky and in mammals DO appear to be joint but frequently arent and I'm sure it's the same with birds.

You'll feel much better tonight, just write things down ahead of time it's so hard to remember what you wanna say when you're stressed and your animal is sick right there with you. I'd leave him in the cage till you get to talk. Versus letting the tech take him out and distracting you. Then the doc will remove him and observe him after speaking with you they'll know what to look for. And they'll weigh him. They'll be able to see things with him flying too, if he chooses to. Make the tech stand in front of the door so nobody walks in and disrupts things, imo. So he doesnt crash the door, or fly out and meet a dog by mistake or something.

And don't let them intimidate you into clipping, it's usually the techs that assume you want that. (smile).
