Default Break Through!

I am SO happy! The stick training has paid off!!!

I was standing by Lucy's cage, talking to her through the cage bars. She leaned over through them, trying to give me kisses (!!!). I opened the cage door to wait for her to come out. Normally, she is really cage territorial and I respect that. This time, she moved torwards me, then stopped. I didn't have the training stick on hand and decided that it wouldn'tbe nice to just leave her. So, I stuck my hand in the cage. I was so nervous!Knowing she bit her old owner to the bone once, you can probably imagine how nervous I am about getting bit. She grabbed me with her beak, tightened it gently. Instead of tossing it away or biting me, she actually brought it TORWARDS me!!!! She stepped up one foot on my hand then waited for me to pickher up.

I brought her up and she sat happily with me, enjoying the company. I can't tell you how happy I am! This is so huge! Just over a week ago, this was a bird who didn't let anyone in her cage and had no idea what 'step up' meant. I am just happy beyond words!!!

That's excellent- I'm so happy for you! I've actually got goosebumps! It's such a wonderful feeling to know that they actually want to step up, especially in Lucy's case!

Maybe that is what she was trying to do with the previous owner and the lady pulled away or showed a negative reaction when she put her beak on her?

That beaking is nothing to be afraid of but most inexperienced people who keep parrots think they are going to get bitten when the bird is only using his/her beak as a third hand to help them feel more stable. When they jerk away the parrot becomes insecure and needs to hold on tighter. Sad that this can happen over and over and cause the parrot to loose confidence in the human hand.

Great work! It sounds like you have an awesome friend in the making

And again! I am still so happy! She is still continuing to step up by herself, before I can even say it!
