Default Birds in NJ

WOW, I have just finished reading all the posts on the birds in NJ that have been "confiscated" by authorities. At first I didn't want to get involved with all the "arguing", however I have to tell you all that I was called the day before the birds came in and was given a heads-up on the situation. First all they were NOT confiscated but were willingly released by the owner. Yes, it is true that a family member was involved, but there is evidence that a third party was also part of it. Second, I was there and physically saw the birds 30 in all - all of whom were in beautiful feather and very well socialized. In time all of the birds will be placed in homes where there are no other birds - they will be kept together with the companion birds in their cages. I will not personally be placing them in my adoption program, but will assist the authorities in selecting the right homes for these birds.
I honestly wish people would stop pointing fingers at one bird store or another when they do not know the facts. I do, but for legal reasons am not at liberty to discuss them. I will tell you this - we have several wonderful exotic bird stores here in N.J. and I will not hesitate to shop in any one of them.

Thank you very much for helping with these birds. I have also been told they have been well cared for and hope they will find a perfect home.

I am glad to hear that there is a good side to that happened. I was worried about these guys when I heard it on the six o'clock news when it broke out. I still should stop in to see Shadow one day.

Thank you for helping them find good homes. So many end up where they don't belong...

My heart goes out to this person. I spoke with the SPCA and they basically told me the same thing as you have posted. They also assured me that they had avian people who were assisting in their care. Didn't realize it was you! They assured me the birds are being well fed and cared for and on a great diet. That was a relief. I cannot imagine what this person must be going through - they obviously loved these birds tremendously. Thanks, Pat, for once again helping birds in need.

Talking Re: Birds in NJ

Thank you all for your kind words but I am sure I am not doing anything each and every one of you would do if the situation arose near you. FYI....we took blood samples from each bird yesterday and will be delivered to our local Board Certified Avian Vet tomorrow. Will keep you posted on the results.

I heard some news today from the person's family member. Unfortunately half of the birds tested positive for PBFD. Apparently 2 TOOs had very strong positive results.

I did also hear that the SPCA would consider returning 2 of the birds to the owner. That is good news as he was devastated by the whole turn of events.

They were very impressed with the way they were all cared for. As a matter of fact he had a big screen TV in the basement playing Disney movies for them all day long.
