Oh yes, definitely - that's such a good idea. A bird room where they can hang out together does not exclude your flock hanging out with you when you're home. But it's great to give them that space and freedom to be in a room rather than cooped up in a cage when you are not home. And also as a place to roost at night, that's priceless.

I think there have been many good points made here. My opinion of bird rooms differs. I believe that birds need their own space and room for what we call 'quiet time' as well as to be able to escape from the unwanted noise, etc. However, I don't think that this room shoule be completly isolated.

I am fortunate that my BR is right off the busiest part of the house. The fids are always in the action without being in it (if you understand what I mean). They have their own space with the ability to close a door when necesary. With a busy house like ours, I don't know how the birds would live without it.

However, many BR's are far off from the main part of the house and cause birds to feel separated from their flock. If you do decided to go with a seperate bird room, I would definatly make it a room where they can be entertained. Aside from being able to easily and quickly go [independently] from playstand to cage (if they want or if you allow them to) as well as a room with lots of windows, a radio or TV (my birds love the radio I have in there) and other things, I think a seperate bird room is great.

I don't have a "bird room" per say, but Winkie's main cage is in the living room & his night cage is in my bedroom. The living room is always busy with somebody or something going on in there. Winkie enjoys being in the thick of things.

I'm a big advacate of the bird room, I think it's better for the fids in the long run. Gives them their own safe haven of sorts. I cannot wait until we move into our new house and the fids get their own room finally.

I like bird rooms as long as there is more than one bird so that they can have their own space where there isn't much in the way of flying around and I don't have to say "no" since our birds are flighted. We take them to another area to interact individually so as not to ignite jealousy of the others or sometimes in compatible groups for energetic play. We have rings and play gyms also in our main living area so while they are out they are constantly interacting with us. If you have both you have choices and can make decisions depending on the needs of your flock.

I, personally, enjoy the birds having their own space. They do have the run of the house but it does make cleaning easier when most of the mess is in one room. I find it also helps with bedtimes and they get proper sleep.

That's a good question Missi. I hope you don't mind if I post about my experience of having a bird area and then changing my set up.

Kady and Kita had always been in the front room (former living room) since they've been with me. We had play periods away from their area and of course I would sit and watch TV or read a book in their room. But I was still concerned that they didn't spend every minute of their day with me or in view.

Some may remember that back in May we started some major construction here, knocking down walls and building walls so I could move their large play enclosures and play stands to the main part of the house where all the action was. We set up a beautiful area for them with a nice morning sun view. We don't have a super busy home, but they could now see who was coming and going. I could sing to them and talk to them all the time. We put a large scenic mural on the wall, decorated with trees and plants....it was a gorgeous! We built them a sleep room that was small and cozy for their nights. I was so happy thinking I had enriched their lives.

Shortly after the big move, I started seeing major changes in the birds. LONG story short...In hind sight, I had stressed them by changing their living arrangements to what I thought was for the better and they both became sick. The change in them (for the better) was immediate when I returned them to the front room.

It's a safe bet to say that Kady and Kita had never been the center of anyone's attention before they came to live with me, so for them they are much better having their own area where they are not flooded.

So for my birds and my situation, bird room!

I think we're going to go with doing a bird room and keeping all te play stands in the living room/dining room and also attaching some Boings and hangable gyms from the ceilings in all rooms (just have to figure out how to do it with vaulted ceilings)

great thread, missi - i've been pondering the same question, and the more i think about it i rather do a kind of bedroom for the birds rather than a bird room... i like having them around the action in the house. however, having a place for them to go and sleep without disturbance (and giving me back my living room) would be nice

She went on to say that birds do best living with the family, where the action is...not secluded in a part of the house where mess and noise can be contained.

I've since told Matt that probably the only way I'll now have a bird room in the future is if we get another grey. Otherwise we'll keep doing what I do now- cage and all gyms spread through the house where the action is.

I think bird rooms are a great concept as long as it doesn't turn into- okay, if you keep making that annoying noise you're going back to your room, or now that the bird has it's own room, they dont need as much human interaction, out of cage/room time, etc etc. Because then it becomes a room for the human's benefit, not the bird's. I also think that a bird who's cage is in the living room (other main room) is going to get more attention (talking back and forth with it, etc) than one who is secluded in it's own room.

I don't know, does any of that make sense? Like I said, I'm battling with this same thing, although I won't have to decide until much further into the future...
I agree with who ever wrote this article...we keep our birds in the family room with us where all the action is, I love it that way, and so do they....they love being with us 24/7.............believe me we are sweeping like 5 times a day or more, and you really need to keep it clean just in case you have company over unexpectedly LOL........ I llove to watch them play with their toys, run around their cage ect...they are just part of us......I would not have it any other way
