Default Bell licking! and hello

Hi everyone! Some of you may remember me - I used to post a lot a couple of years ago, and I intend to start doing so again!

My little Princess Parrot, Leo, spends a lot of time licking one of his bells. What on earth is he doing? Any ideas?

Best wishes to you all,

Michele and flock

I don't think that the reason why he's doing it is as important as to prevent him from it and, if I were you, I would take that bell out of his cage and pronto! I simply do not trust those cheap bells that the toys bring to be safe...

Metal poisoning, and crop impaction or intestinal occlusion from swallowing the clapper.

Welcome back Michele. The danger is metal poisoning from the coating. Stainless steel would be safe, but it is most probably some sort of zinc coating. I have never seen a small bell made from SS but you can get the big ones and tube bells for macaws.

Hi, nice to see you around Michelle. I agree with all that has been said. Unless you know for sure if a bell is stainless, remove it, it is rare that affordable toys have stainless since it is more expensive.

Thank you everyone! Oh no, I am so sad to have to take it out - and also worried that he has been licking the bell. I knew about the clapper danger, but he can't reach the clapper on this one. I will search around and get him a new bell - stainless.
Thank you again.

Hi there Michelle! Ruby and I remember ya'll! Ruby had metal poisoning a while back and it is no fun. Lots of vet visits and meds. She is fine now, but I sure do watch the metal stuff. Bet you can find one that is stainless. Poor Leo, hate to take his loved toy.

Thanks everyone. Leo looks bereft, looking for his favorite toy! Does anyone know a source for a stainless steel bell? I want a traditional 'bell' shape - not one shaped like a paper towel roll, which is all I seem to be able to find. Price no object! He deserves his bell - he is a real sweet boy.
