Default back from the vets.

Well Benji got a clean bill of health. It seems Zoey has a bit of a sinus infection. Cricket still shows some signs of a yeast infection???? What sort of things cause a yeast infection?

Sorry to hear about Zoey and Cricket, Jim. So is Zoey on meds now too? I don't know much about the yeast thing, other than I gather it's pretty common. Could she have had it even before you got her?

Jim since I don't know your vet, how did he determine the yeast? If your bird has been eating bread products, yeast will show up in the fecal smear or gram stain. I see yeas in our birds when doing a smear and they have eaten bread the meal before. I don't worry until I see budding yeast as this is what leads to a yeast infection. A few drop of ACV in the birds water bowl a couple of times a week should keep budding yeast at bay. Once it gets a start you will may need something stronger like nystatin or a stronger antifungal.

Sorry to hear about Zoey and Cricket! What kind of treatment is Zoey on for the sinus infection (if any)?

When Lulu had a yeast infection at her last checkup the AV said it was something seasonal that she notices more often in 'toos and tiels - maybe p'lets have a similar affliction?

ACV is the cure. The yeast infection is very small. Watch the poop. Zoey basicaly has a cold. Almost cleared up. From what I gathered from the vet, who was not their usual avian vet, it was very small amounts. When Cricket was first diagnosed the vet asked if he had just eaten any bread products (does corn meal count?) and said it was not unusual after being on anti biotics. Sophie goes in in two weeks and we will be seeing our usual avian vet then. Apple cider vinegar for everybody!!!
I won't go in to detail why I think Zoey got the cold from me but I do.

Hope you two sweeties feel better soon.

Sugar in the diet can make yeast infections worse and drag it on. Antibiotics can also cause yeast as it kills good bacteria. Cultured yogurt (plain nonfat) as well as ACV in the water can help rid a bird of it. Also some cinnamon is good to help with digestion and for excellent roughage some millet. If you are feeding pellets check to see the sugar content. Some pellets can have high sugar content. Also watch the amount of fruit you feed, as fruit is high is sucrose (sugar) and can make yeast linger. When my caique had a mild yeast infection, we eliminated the fruit from her diet and it stopped it cold. We also gave her some cultured yogurt (mixed with her veggies) and ACV. Within 2 weeks, it was all cleared up with no medication.

I'm a sissy I guess. Its gonna deplete my emergency bird fund as all these return trips to the vet have been killin me, not to mention Kelly's surgery, but I'm gonna break down and get the anti biotics for Zoey and meds for Cricket as well. I really hate it when 50 bucks is so hard to come up with. Oh well, I guess I can't be perfect in EVERY way.
