Baby and the blinds... Yesterday after I got home, I took Baby into her old room to leave her to play awhile on a wooden chair. (I've been doing that a little bit lately now that I can get her perched most of the time. I do it she will get used to feeling safe outside her cage in the living room. The goal is to have her cage back in her room, but a playstand in the living room.)
I really thought I had bird proofed the room. Since I had moved her cage out, I had raised the miniblinds, which left the pull cord down and on the window ledge. I forgot it was hanging down to the side.
She was happy on the chair, I left the room, I gave her some snacks and a toy. I walked by about 10 minutes later and saw her on the INSIDE window ledge (or whatever that's called) with her left foot tangled in that miniblind cord. It was tangled up pretty good.
I was really thinking "oh no, she's gonna freak out, try to fly off, not let me help her since we are still breaking in on trust, and get herself hurt."
first thing I looked for were scissors to make sure I could clip the cord if needed, I quickly found some.
She was not panicky, she was very relaxed actually. She let me help her, that was nice. I was glad to see she tusted me enough now to let me touch her legs a little to unwrap the cord. Of course, it wasn't easy, but with her pulling the cord with her beak and me unwrapping, after about 5 minutes we got it done. She actually had both feet tangled by the end of this thing.
She was very calm throughout the ordeal. It was as if she had this happen before. LOL.
I put the cord up, stayed in there a little while, and she seemed content so I left again.
I came back in about 5 minutes and she was in the floor by the treadmill, I picked up the perch and she did that waddle-run gig over to the perch and climbed on as if she had been rescued. I have worked so hard to get her to be able to be trusting of me, the perch and to be transported. Of course we got 1/2 way back and she flew to her cage. She is getting very good at flying.
I have read stories of birds and human's relationships being helped by situations where the bird has been "rescued" by that human. I dunno, this could have been one of em.
Watch those miniblind cords!
