I just got Niobe, a white cap pionus, on Saturday and she is really warming up.
For the last few days I have been opening up Niobe's cage while I read. She looked as if she wanted to come out but was too scared to actually do it. She would approach the open door, eyeing it, then ran away, she would repeat this several times before I finally shut the door and left the room. Well, today, she actually came out! She was out for a good half an hour on top of her cage. She even started playing with a toy that I have hanging up there and preening. I was a little worried about when I would have to put her away because I didn't want to stress her out. But I just put a couple treats inside and in she went. I got a good bird on my hands.
She even takes nuts out of my hand now (not too many of course), and she doesn't get too freaked out when I reach in to get something (or move something). I think she trusts me a little more now. She has never tried to bite me, but I think she's probabally a bit too scared to try.
She has started vocalizing more. She has really cute squeaks and brays, her scream is not so cute though. Both my pis have very loud voices (louder than a sun), but, thankfully, they don't use them as often.
She eats her fruits and veggies, but prefers fruits. I have been offering her some cooked foods (beak apetit and a goldenfeast cooking blend w/pasta) but she hasn't been too intrested in those. She seems like a really nice bird. I can't wait to get to know her a little better.
