Animal hoarding CHARLOTTE COUNTY: Animal control officers say the problem of animal hoarding is getting worse in Southwest Florida. Charlotte animal control officers say they just busted a big case and the pet owners could face charges. At first glance, the house where the pets were found looked like any other quiet house on a quiet street. But once inside, some would call it a modern day Noah's Ark. "Rough guess, there were probably 25 to 30 birds in the house and multiple dogs," said Reannon Juergensen of Charlotte County Animal Control. There were birds, puppies, a skunk and even a flying squirrel. "The overall living conditions were absolutely horrible," said Juergensen. "There was probably about three inches of feces and birdseed on the bottom of the cages." Juergensen calls it a textbook case of animal hoarding - too many pets and not enough care. "We are seeing a lot more of that," said Juergensen. Investigators say this doesn't appear to be a case of abuse. She says it just seems like the animal population in the home got out of control. "They obviously care for their animals but the amount they had is overwhelming for anybody," said Juergensen. We tried to speak to the pet owners, but they did not want to talk. As of now, the pet owners have not been charged with anything. "A case packet will be submitted to the State Attorney's Office and then they will decide if there will be any further action taken," said Juergensen. Ultimately, they will decide on any jail time, fines, permanent loss of the pets or whether there will be any repercussions at all. |
