Default The Angry Bather

When I first got Schroeder I was amazed that he let me drench him in the shower without the slightest protest.

Well, that has all changed, lol! He gets weekly baths with a misting squirt bottle and, since today was over 90 degrees and sweltering, I decided he needed a good misting (heck, I needed a good misting!)

He got angry at me as he always does, and tries to attack the squirt bottle the entire time.

I misted myself and told him all about how great it felt on such a hot day and he wasn't buying it. Of course, after the bath, if I step away for a second, he forgives me of all my sins and is his regular happy and loving self so at least he doesn't hold a grudge!

My question is this, should I be focusing on making him enjoy baths or not forcing him into baths against his will? I don't want to damage our relationship or stress him out but he needs his baths, especially on a day like today!

Every time its over he seems to forget/forgive how he got wet in the first place and goes about being his regular self and drying off.

Am I doing the right thing here by misting him even though he gets angry? I point the bottle above his head so it rains down on him and he just lunges at it, He's not afraid of the bottle and doesnt attack it if its not squirting and I still play with the bottle and love on it and love on the misting should I just keep doing that and bathing him even if he protests?

(PS about his beak) apparently it's gone away. I guess it was just a food stain or something? :S I still haven't gotten a new camera but these shots were easy enough to take without the LCD screen, enjoy!

LOL...what animal likes being bathed...lol Ever notice when you wash a dog, they freak out and act like they're being tortured, then after you're done, they run around like mad cause they feel so good.

When I hold Pita in the shower, he just stands on my finger and doesn't move. When I put him back on his perch, he starts rubbing his beak and shaking, and chattering. With the sprayer, he will come to me and bend his head so I get the right spots, then like today, he just stands there soaking wet, not moving for like a long time. Like he's frozen and can't move because he's wet. Then after he starts drying off, he gets all active again ....lol

Schroeder may just be in a mood. I think you have to catch them at the right time, otherwise they get all persnickety...and act like you're infringing on thier space. But after you're done, I think they feel really good. It's all an act. lol

There isn't really much you can do to make them enjoy bathing. Have you tried other ways, like putting him in the shower, holding him under running water in the sink, putting a big bowl of water in his cage...? If none of those entice him, you're just going to have to make him mad!

While you're spraying him, talk in a fun, excited voice, or sing a funny song. Ollie likes it when I talk in a really high peppy voice and tell her how pretty she is, interspersed with lots of "WOO!'s". Most of the time she will initiate the bath herself when she's eating breakfast in the kitchen, but if not I stick her in the shower under the running water. She hates it and makes quite a racket, but afterwards she is so silly and happy. She loves to be wet, she just hates the getting wet process!

Great pictures BTW!

I do what Camille does, so my birds all think it's "fun time" when they get a bath. I make a big game out of it. (Actually, I don't have to do that anymore - I did with those that hated their mists or baths).

it doesn't matter how much of a fun time I try to make it. Three out four do not like baths other then in their water dish.
