Default Air purifier question.......

I just purchased the Rabbit Air air purifier. It has a negative ion button. Should this be turned off around birds. Here’s what the manual has to say about the negative ions: From

ATTENTION
TM The BioGP Air Purifier produces millions of healthy
"negative ions" to improve the air you breathe and freshen
your indoor environment through the use of anion
generator inside of the unit discharge. The negative ions
help reduce suspended particulate, and at the same time,
make it difficult for pollutants to become airborne in the first
place. Negative ions are odorless, tasteless, and invisible
molecules that we inhale in abundance in certain
environments. Think mountains, waterfalls, and beaches.
Scientific research shows negative ions may help to
alleviate depression, relieve stress, and boost our daytime
TM energy. The Rabbit Air BioGP air purifier uses non-ozone
clusters to produce negative ions, therefore, our unit has
zero ozone emission and it is harmless to human and the
environment.

From the sound of this it sounds good, but I know I have read somewhere about ozone and ions being bad. Are negative ions different that non-negative ions? Sorry I don’t know much about these things. All I know is my living room has become a birdie dust dust bowl and my sinuses couldn’t handle it anymore, so I bought an air purifier. Any suggestions on how long or when I should have it running? Do I leave it on 24/7 or just during the day when the fids are awake and stirring up dust or what? Thanks everyone!

I've read lots of negative opinions about Ionizers and birds, but can't seem to come up much concrete info to back it up. For human exposure though, I found this on the EPA website though:
Quote:
Manufacturers and vendors of ozone devices often use misleading terms to describe ozone. Terms such as "energized oxygen" or "pure air" suggest that ozone is a healthy kind of oxygen. Ozone is a toxic gas with vastly different chemical and toxicological properties from oxygen. Several federal agencies have established health standards or recommendations to limit human exposure to ozone.
There is also a table on this page outlining some of the dangers. I would have posted this as well, but couldn't get the table to format well. At any rate, based on the EPA's stance on Ozone Generators and human health, I'd be very leery of exposing my birds to them.

Edit: Not sure about the purifier you have, the manufacturer seems to be saying that it is not an ozone generator, so may be fine.

Okay, I just found this on their site:

Does BioFresh™ Air Purifier produce Ozone?

No. BioGP™ air purifier does not produce any ozone.

So as long as it does not produce ozone, then the negative ions are okay????

Well, I'm not sure. Couldn't really find anything on negative ions that didn't also seem to pertain to ozone generation. We need a scientist here! Maybe Bee can help?

Here is a good site that may be able to answer all your questions. I use ari purifiers also, but the ozone or ionizer is turned off on mine, I also use the high efficiency pleated air filters in my furnace. I have to change them more often because of my high dust birds, but I think it does help.

Air Purifiers - Negative Ion Technology

This link explains the part about negative ions, but if you look you will also see an explanation about ozone on another tab. Since I have asthma, I found the ozone one very interesting. i would stick to the high efficiency filters and the HEPA filter in the unit you are using now and not even use the ionizer.

NO, no ionizers for birds. They deposit things in the air that remain on their feathers. I know of birds who plucked after exposure. Ozone is different, every unit puts out different amounts. I use an IQ that is quaranteed no ozone but each individual model is tested.
