Default Adding species

We dont have land yet but we are really talking about this big giant aviary. When its built, it will have several island type areas for each bird to roost and have their own space. NO MORE CAGES!!! Woohoo!!!!!! Anyway, we talked about adding birds that dont require companionship to the level of what we already have. We want to add life that will be compatible with our current fids. At first I thought canaries, or finches but I changed my mind. We would end up with hundreds of birds in a free flight environment. So now Im thinking maybe a few Lori's or Rosellas. What else could I add that would roost on its own and be happy to fly free in a big bright tree filled room? I want birds that sing or chirp pretty with bright colors so we can see them when we go in. And we dont want anybirdie bickering.

How about me? I could be quite colorful and I would love to fly free! I promise I won't start any arguments.

Maybe budgies or ringies would work. With budgies you could end up with a few extra if you provide nest boxes. Budgies are too fast to get in the way of a bigger bird especially if a big place. In my aviary the bickering that takes place is between the same species not cross species. The budgies do like to come eat out the sun dish although they can do it fast like a drive thru window. Someone elses dish always tastes better even though all dishes have the same food served.

Or maybe Cockatiels? They are very fast well (as are the budgies, as Angie stated) in case they need quick getaways - in a large enough aviary I don't think this would be an issue though. From what I read (and with my limited experience with Lulu), the tiels seem to mind their own business well and the males can have quite the songs/whistles.

You have 3 Australian birds - the 'toos and the Eclectus - I would think that adding a species from the same continent would be a good idea (budgies, tiels, lories, and rosellas would work).

Angie I love your budgie drive-thru image, you're making me laugh! Budgies can be quite gutsy but they do know how to be quick if they are not wanted LOL.

Johns fear is it will turn into a rescue! With no cages to clean, being able to hose down the floors, and letting them fly, I dont care if we have 20 birds in there!

but a rescue is a good thing! maybe when the time comes, you can check out the local shelters and see about some birds that are needing a good home. cockatiels or lories would be great, i think. there is a zoo near us that has a walk through aviary with lories, gallahs, cockatiels, and a few ekkies. i think as long as there is enough space for each to have "personal space", it should be fine.

i would love to have an aviary one day....faaar in the future.
