Re: Is your city the most Humane Arty, here in northern Maine you can still find that serenity, occasionally. There is a small lake near the north entrance to Baxter State Park near here, called Scraggly Lake. There are some primitive campsites provided along the shore, and it was while tenting there twenty two years ago that I first heard the laughter of the loons. Their primordial cries kept me awake and fascinated for hours. That was when I knew that it was time for me to pull up stakes and leave the more populated area where I lived at the time. Sadly, as with everywhere else, the Jet-ski and booze set is slowly taking over, even in some of the remote areas. There is still a magical stillness to be found in the great north woods though, you just have to look a little harder for it. |
