Default Wild parakeets’ nests destroyed

Wild parakeets’ nests destroyed
Wednesday, November 28, 2007

YACOLT - Jennette Kachmar picked up a twig at the base of the power pole and added it to the twiggy bouquet in her other hand.

When she went to bed Monday night, some of those sticks had been part of a Monk parakeets' nest - a basketlike structure that had enveloped the electrical transformer at the top of that pole.

That nest at the corner of Hubbard Avenue and Twin Falls Street was one of five removed by utility crews early Tuesday morning. While most of the birds fled, three were netted and killed by U.S. Department of Agriculture employees.

Yes, unfortunately, they are still doing this in FL also. FPL goes out at night with CO2 and blasts the nests. Landscapers throw the nests and babies into the mulchers! Several of our FWCAS Quaker babies have come to us rescued from both. Quakers can not be released back into the wild in FL. We have six Quakers in the Rescue Room right now that need forever homes in Tampa-Naples area, FL. If interested, The Florida West Coast Avian Society, Inc. or PM me for more details.

My Shrek was a Quaker rehome whom the pound turned over to FWCAS. After 20 yrs, his people decided to move to Mexico and dropped him and his companion GCC off at the pound! As you are aware, I fostered then, adopted them both.
