G'Morning! I was beat last night and zonked out really early. I only took a couple of photos since everyone else had it covered, I'll post them if they're different than what we have here already.
It was great seeing all the PC people. Josh I'm glad you had fun I was so happy to meet you and your running buddy...Diane? I bet you didn't know you were a bird magnet! IME all Macaws love tall lanky boys LOL. I guess it's cuz they think it's like being on a tree or something. Like Todd, all you "over 6' 2'' types" they all wanna be on.
The birds really enjoyed themselves, too, they are all beautiful with such excellent temperaments. Some babies weren't out yet like a baby Toucanet (I think he was a Toucanet) who was cracking me up.
Karen, I may have missed something, but I think Dr Clubb didn't even have time to do a formal presentation. The store was so busy and all the customers were speaking with her one on one. And everywhere she went there was a small crowd of people listening to what was being discussed.
Dr Clubb was so generous with her time, I didn't expect her to be there all day and being so accessable. You can tell she would be an excellent vet on a personal level even if she weren't so famous if you know what I mean. She has the quality I like, actually listening to what the people say, validating their concerns and giving personal answers. I think she enjoyed herself, too, and it was fun to see her taking pictures like everyone else.
We asked her about the recent PBFD problem here and nationally and she said she found it odd because that's not a disease you really see very much anymore. She said alot more but I didn't take notes and don't want to misquote her.
One thing I want to mention (and this is gonna bug everyone but you know how I am , it's my job LOL)....Dr Clubb said that birds need their sleep. Quiet undisturbed sleep [versus them sleeping in the family room while we watch TV].
I spent some time with the Bird Show guy off and on all day...since I'm always interested in performing birds and how their quality of life is. He probably thought what the heck is up with this woman and my birds LOL.
They looked like were in great condition and even though it was so hot out (like 95 degrees) you could tell they love being out with people, doing their thing and getting all the attention. They were under a tent and got plenty of spray baths and enjoyed that, too. Like you'd expect, the Macaws were gregarious and wanted to climb on you and the Grey kept his distance LOL.
I wanted to know if they had to perform to get fed, since that's a technique some use, but no, they eat in the morning 6 hours before the show and after the noon show which would be 1-2 pm, the normal time for parrots to start eating. They had a Parrotlet in a baby carriage that gets pushed across the stage lol, she probably thinks it's dumb but we humans get a kick out of it. The guy was very kind to them, spent all his time on them talking, feeding, giving new "toys" so that made me happy for them. He gave some tips in the show about giving healthy food, how to work with a large bird who doesnt want to cooperate for something (how to "let them win") even though it was part of the show LOL. Like the Scarelt is supposed to yell and pretend to bite and refuse to do something and he gets him to cooperate.
He made it clear that these are trained birds and if you aren't home alot and willing to give good food and enrichment then don't even think a parrot is the right pet for you. I appreciated hearing that.
The Gold's Gym people kindly set up a smoothie cart and worked out there in the sun, donating some proceeds to Gabriel Foundation. I thought it was nice of them to do that as good neighbors.
Todd Marcus staff, thanks for cooking all day. That's one job I didn't envy but you kept the food going really great.
Kings Cages brought alot of additional specialty cages for the outside part that you don't always find everywhere. There's nothing like a King's cage for quality and durability. Thanks to Kings and Todd for the generous discounts! Now if I could just get them to make a super large 1/2 inch model I'd be happy.
Anyway, thank you to the Todd Marcus Birds Exotic family for all your hard work, being so accessible and helpful to us customers, and most important offering high quality, well socialized, healthy and happy birds of every size for every budget and household. And providing any ongoing help that we might need, it makes a big difference to know that your store is still personal enough that we're always welcome back to ask questions or get behavioral help or whatever. I've never seen a customer get rushed out, and the staff is always available no matter how busy it is to give each person individual attention.
I'm new to this store and It's amazing how many names of customers and BIRDS the staff all know. And amazing hearing so many customers say how far back they go over the 24 years that they've been in business.
Edited to add: And even MORE important to me in the grand scheme of things, thank you for having the consignment birds well taken care of and available. It's heartbreaking for a parrot to lose their home and I love seeing them find a new good one. Not being flipped online like merchandise. As a former store owner I remember how rehomed birds became a part of my store and it was rewarding to me. I always felt bad when I had to say no to any.
