Black-hooded Parakeets have arrived in Lakeland. This photo, which was shot recently in The Ledger parking lot by staff photographer David Mills, is the first evidence of this species presence in Polk County in many years. Hope they dont get killed. Maybe this is north america way to get indigenous species of parrots.

This is not uncommon...Heck, we even spot monkeys once in a while down here.

MONKEYS! REALLY!! I always thought I would like a monkey! Even tho' I already have 2.

what confuses me is why they are calling them parakeets and NOT Nanday Conures which is what they are.............. a little wierd that someone in the editing failed to pick that up...

It says here (link below) and on Wikipedia that they're known by both names;

I know, sorry, but my point is they make it seem rare and strange.. I guess because everywhere I have ever gone in the US there are colonies of Quakers (Monks), Nandays (Black Hooded P.) and also Mitred, Cherry Heads etc... It just seem to me to be WOW-- RARE LOOK SEE... Unusual... Maybe to NONE bird people it would be quite a sight...

sorry, I know they are referred to that sometimes... just no amongst bird people usually...

I know what you mean, I wondered the same thing when I read that. I know there are wild flocks elsewhere. Aren't there some in Pennsylvania?
