The Formosan Magpie and the Mikado Pheasant are competing for the title of Taiwan's national bird.
The first round of a voting to choose a bird that best represents Taiwan came to an end on Tuesday. After a three-month online voting process, web-users have selected the Formosan Magpie and the Mikado Pheasant to go to the final round.
Organizers of this campaign said that most countries have their own national birds, such as the bald eagle for the United States. They said a national bird would make Taiwan's distinctive species and ecological conservation stand out.
The organizers will send a proposal to the legislature for a final decision. It is expected that Taiwan will soon have its official national bird.
