Default Rare Parrot photographed for the first time

Rare Parrot photographed for the first time
June 27, 2007

Adriana Tovar y Luis Eduardo Urueña, researchers of the Colombia-based nonprofit Fundación ProAves, found and photographed the extremely rare Perija parakeet (Pyrrhura caeruleiceps), of which only 30 to 50 individuals likely survive. These photographs are the first ever taken of the species.

Deforestation and wildfires for agriculture and grazing have denuded much of the birds’ habitat, conservationists say. The parrot that is distinguished by its bright blue fronted head and white breast may also be threatened by illegal trade in the species.

“As more and more remote areas are being settled, the Perija parakeet reminds us how important it is to conserve as much natural habitat as we can,” said Paul Salaman of the American Bird Conservancy.

“Who knows what wonderful biodiversity is being destroyed before it has had a chance to be discovered?”

Aren't they beautiful conures! What a pity that it is probably too late for them, with that few known survivors.

Karen

How beautiful. It is so sad that we as humans have devastated so many habitats of these creatures.

When will it stop?

I would say with such a small surviving population, a captive breeding program would be their only real chance. Perhaps there are unknown colonies, or the estimated surviving numbers are exaggerated? If there truly are only 30 to 50 left, then a capture/rescue program followed by an intensive captive breeding program is about all they have left for options. Whether or not the gene-pool is large enough to support a healthy resurgence would remain to be seen.

Ift here's illegal trade and capturing of the bird like listed in the article, someone has to have a pair of them somewhere int he world and must be breeding them.
