More parrot nests coming to Yacolt
by Holley Gilbert
The Oregonian
February 22, 2008

VANCOUVER -- Wild Quaker parrot enthusiasts are joining forces March 1 in Yacolt to erect more alternative nesting sites in an effort to keep the colorful birds from building on Clark Public Utilities' transformers, where they pose a safety hazard.

The Yacolt Parrot Preservation Association, formed in November when the utility removed five nests from transformers, has invited various bird groups interested in the fate of about 15 parrots to help put up seven steel poles and attach nesting sites.

The poles and other materials are being paid for by donations, said Joy Tindall, one of the association founders. The work party was organized after the utility, association and town of Yacolt reached an agreement last week that keeps the nests off power equipment but gives the parrots' fans more time and materials to relocate the birds.

As part of the agreement, Clark Public Utilities has ordered orange plastic sleeves to fit over its power poles, a tactic that has deterred Quaker parrots elsewhere from transformers, said Mick Shutt, spokesman for the utility. Tindall said the wild parrots, also called monk parrots, apparently don't like orange. [LINK: Read on...]

Glad to hear there are people who can find time in their busy days to take time out to help the birds!

Encouraging news, for sure. Always good to hear when we're at least trying to find ways to coexist rather than eradicate.

Clark PUD lied--AGAIN!

In an earlier article Dean Sutherland was quoted as saying they needed to measure the utility pole before they could order the orange insulating sleeve. It is not necessary. The material comes in 1 and 2 and 6 foot widths. It is a stalling technique.

And the comment by Mr. Schutt is also phony proaganda. The sleeve does not cost $800--it costs less than $200. There is no installation required.

People, please realize the utility company is trying to make themselves look good. They are lying to the public. E-mail Alison at EdgewaterParrots.com--she is the one who devised the sleeve, and she will prove to you that Clark PUD is lying!

I heard that Clark PUD killed one of the Quakers last week during a teardown. The bird was stabbed with either one of their tools or a twig that was part of the nest he was trying to build. Clark said they would fire anyone who was responsible, but I bet when the truth comes out they will try to cover up by saying the nest was empty--but it wasn't. Four witnesses saw the birds fly out.

Don't let the utility company keep killing the birds. The breeding season is coming soon--what will they and the YPPA do then? They have not said anything about that!!!

Please write to Nick Peck, VP of the YPPA at: peck@pacifier.com
Councilwoman Holyk at: yacoltparrots@yahoo.com
The Mayor of Yacolt at: yacoltmayor@aol.com
Dean Sutherland of Clark PUD at: dsutherland@clarkpud.com

Demand they stop killing the parrots! This "good news" is nothing but a PR piece put out by Clark that is full of misleading statements designed to manipulate the public.

Just as their comment that they will not kill any more parrots (but will keep removing nests) is a phony piece of PR. They are still killing the birds, but because the public is relieved that they are not being euthanized, they breathe a sigh of relief so deep that they don;t even see the parrots dying underneath their noses.

The population is not 15-20. Ask those of us in town...it is more like 5! The population is 1/3 of what is was when this started. Clark wants to kill off the birds; Mayor Warren said, "They must go!"

Please--someone out there help us get the truth out!
They are killing our birds, and no one is stoppng them!

In the Northeast, we've had the good people from Foster Parrots, Maspeth Bird Haven, Edgewater Parrots and Brooklyn Parrots working separately and together to try and save Quakers from being exterminated. BrooklynParrots.com: A Web Site About the Wild Parrots of Brooklyn is a marvelous site, to stay informed regarding these feral parrots.

From that site is a recent entry:
Quote:
Today, Washington TV Station KATU provided an updated report on the situation in Yacolt, Washington. As I've indicated on this site, the situation in Yacolt is highly unfortunate, because it appears that while a humane solution involving alternative nest platforms has been forged, evidence exists that the power company continues to remove nests despite the fact that doing this practically ensures that many birds will not survive the winter.

KATU's report about at least one dead Quaker Parrot being found in the vicinity of a recently removed nest is accurate. An autopsy was performed to identify the exact cause of death and the medical examiner's report will soon be released to the media.
