100 Confiscated Birds Adopted In 2 Hours
SEATTLE - Less than 2 hours after the Seattle Animal Shelter opened Wednesday, 100 parakeets rescued from a one-bedroom apartment in the University District were adopted into loving homes.
After receiving numerous complaints from neighbors, Seattle Humane Society officers found a flock of 110 parakeets in a cage in the living room.
Officer Neil Deruyter said conditions were less than ideal and the birds were beginning to overwhelm the owner. He'd been collecting birds for about five years.
Ten birds were given to a veterinarian because they were having difficulty flying. The rest were put up for adoption. A line of about 30 people waited for the noon opening, holding cages required for free adoption of the bright, multicolored birds.
Seattle Animal Shelter executive director Don Jordan applauded the community's response, calling it the most tremendous response in his 17 years at the shelter.
The response also helped set a single-day adoption record at the shelter, which was established in 1972.
