As soon as the tray is placed back in, up they go.
It could very well be your bird is pecking at what he/she is seeing.
Example:, birds have keen eye site, My wife Rose Ann has a small beauty mark on her face, when our birds are with her, they pick at that mark, or when she may have a little piece of food on her face while eating, they head for it...
It may not be (poop is good....yum yum), but simply "hey that looks interesting".
And as I am reading above, it could be a vitamin deficiency.
Occasionally we offer our birds apple vinegar cider, this de-detoxifies.
