Default Flooring for Outside Aviary

Being that we've made the outside aviaries bigger, we've decided to not use wire grating for the bottom of them this year. They are on my deck which is made with treated lumber. Kady would never go the bottom, but Kita definitely will and I'm positive she would love to munch on the planks.

What could I put down over the treated wood that would be safe?

Are those fake green grass mats safe?

I wouldnt do it Karen. They get moldy and rot out your deck too. Do you have enough grass to pur a slab and put them on that? You could mix your own cement. Or even ep henry pavers. Then you wouldnt need a permit.

Leigh, we plan to also put a flight aviary on the lawn. They are learning to fly so that aviary will remain a grass bottom. They'll be in there when I can be in there with them

We have two aviaries on the deck where they spend most their summer days. They are more secure on my deck where I can leave them and hear and see them from the house. I can always set up a grate for Kita if there are no other solutions, but I was hoping to get away from that.

I know that Bea spread dry alfalfa all over her birdroom floor. Perhaps that would be enough? Or, if you want to totally cover the treated planks, how about gravel or crushed marble? Many dirt roads in VT get a layer of crushed stone this time of year.

I think a grate is the only solution other than some type of grass or shavings. Anything else will rot the wood.

I've been thinking about it all day also. I am going to ask Ken to put the extra panels down as grates on the bottom. It'll be the safest solution for my floor walker.

maybe you should rephrase that, walking is safe it is the floor eating part that is a problem.
