Angry Blackmasked lovebirds (heartbreaking)

I would like to introduce you all to the two latest additions they were relinquished and not a moment too soon.

Here is thier story...

Meet Lucky and Lucia they are here till we can find them a great forever home who understands what it really means to care for an animal. Here I am being their 4th home thier first of course was the breeder then another couple who then just gave these birds to anyone who would take them and that is how they ended up at the house prior to coming here. Sad to say 2 others were not so lucky and never made it out of the house alive, a cockatoo who they say just up and died at a very young age uh huh ok yeah right and a Myna who choked on a cheeto they said it was an accident uh huh because someone gave it the cheeto and thats not the one who liked cheetos it was the too that could eat cheetos great salt salt salt artifical who knows what and preservatives you ever leave a cheeto out on the counter those things will even outlive cockroaches.

The lovies 2 one is a blackmasked female compulssive egg layer which could of been avoided and one blue blackmasked I believe to be male. They were fed a diet that consisted of mostly black sunflower sedds and a mixture of other seeds. I dont know I tossed the container outside it was disgusting sticky dirty inside and out filled with dried poop covered bowls (how sanitary is that?) The nestbox hmmm wonder why the female was a egg laying machine. was disgusting there was no way to open it to clean it and even if there was I seriously doubt they would have the poop on top was over an inch thick also on the sides there was nails sticking out everywhere even pointy ends which were all covered in rust a peek inside and you could see things crawling in it it was ewwwwwww. The cage well the cage would of been nice if it was for a sleep cage for 1 lovie but toss the box in a bunch of bowls holding waters and seeds so they did not have to feed and water them everyday grrrrrrr they had no room. Toys were nasty well what was left of them the rope toy that was in there was so filthy it stood by itself no exageration there either. the female had begun to pluck her legs are almost naked and you can see definate ring around the neck where the plucking had started there as well the male is fully clothed this really surprised me. They are both so skinny. They have made the switch to zupreem and still get a sprinkling of seed every now and then and they have been introduced to some fresh foods as well but they show no interests in that as of yet.

The woman who knows I do rescues brought them to me they were her brothers and he had kept trying to get her to take them she however is not a bird person. She was always on his butt whenever she went to his to clean the cage do this do that she actually forced him to empty the tray before she would even put it in her car the contents on the bottom were nearly 5 inches deep.

They will be coming out of quarentine in about 2 weeks they are very active and very sweet though they are not handable right now hopefully they will be soon here are some pictures of the cage and of the nest box followed by some lovely pictures of them. So you know they were not breeding these birds they just did not have a clue wth they were doing. Thank goodness they were not from the conditions they were in that would of been a lot of deaths.

Bless your heart. The day they came to you should be their new hatch day as I am sure they feel like the luckiest birds around

I've seen this before - lack of interest & no time spent on them at all. They were lucky to get any food or water.

I praise the sister for getting them out of there & to you. She may not be a bird person but she saw they were in need & she took them where they could be helped. Too bad she didn't act quick enough for the others - maybe their deaths was the 'straw' that made her take charge.

If they never had babies maybe they are both hens? Are you going to keep them together?

All the best & a photo update would be a relief - can't wait to see them in better shape.

I believe them to be both a male and a female from the feel of thier pelvic bones I will be sending feathers of to Mr David Harmon I have a bunch to send him and its wonderful to find someone who will do it so cheap $1.00 a bird. the green one also has a wider stance. Yes they will be kept together since they have been together thier whole lives I just wouldnt find it fair to seperate them plus they are truely in love. Since removing the nest box no signs of nesting have happened. And no eggs on the cage floor. I will have to get some new pics of them as the ones you see were taken on the day they came in (3/17/08). I am grateful his siter stepped in and she always asks how they are when we see her she is just happy that they are getting the proper care they are entitled to.

Oh my gosh, those poor little lovies - that cage is just disgusting! Yes please post pics of them now and update us on their progress. Do they get any out of cage time yet? I'm sure some exercise to get their muscles in shape is long overdue.

I will have to get som epics tommorow of the lil ones and as for out of cage time not yet they are still quarentine and the room they are in is not very bird freindly been working on making it a quarentine room though these came to me at the last moment and we already had another bird in the quarentine section may have to set up several at this rate. Soon as quarentine is over they will be getting thier first out of cage time. They did however escape thier cage once while I was redoing thier water the green one can only flutter but the blue is a very strong flyer was surprised.
