A month ago I purchased 4 tubes from; LINK: SpectraBird

My birds have always had the best Full Spectrum lighting that was available to them(5000K/98CRI) at the time.

My order was only a few dollars more than what it normally costs me. My last order of tubes were $15-16 each and SpectraBird tubes are $38.50 for two. Patrick Thrush the owner of SpectraBird offers a discount for ParrotChatter members, so that brings the price even lower for us. After using this lighting for only a month and seeing what it has done for my birds I would gladly pay so much more.

What I am seeing here is no less than amazing! First off the lighting is not as harsh as the 5000K/98CRI tubes I was using. It gives off a softer glow as compared to the other tubes.

Many of you know that I have had a devil of a time getting my birds to eat fresh food. Many a time I have thought my dear Kady is anorexic. We have been battling some health problems with both the birds and that has made getting a good diet into them important and extremely difficult.

These lights are allowing my birds to see colors that they hadn't seen before in their home. Toys that they never bothered to play with before, they now love. They are more active and are displaying a sense of calm and confidence in their demeanor. They literally have turned into eating machines. I started seeing a change in their eating habits in less than two weeks of use. Foods that I have always served and then disposed of untouched are being eaten now. Kita has been a bit slower than Kady, but she's eating some whereas before she ate none. Kady is now eating chunks of Sweet Potato, Squash, Carrots, Beans, Papaya, Mango, Cantaloupe. We're going to try some greens this week. I have always had to hide them in Birdie Bread. I'm anxious to see what he thinks of them now.

Kady went to visit the AV yesterday and is at an all time high weight. My AV noticed immediately all the changes he was showing. While we consulted he sat on my shoulder and jabbered and laughed when I laughed. Normally he would be scared and not moving.

So anyway, this product get two thumbs up from me. If you're going to change or add lighting for your birds, I highly recommend the SpectraBird lighting.

This is pretty interesting - knowing that all lights are not equal. They often say the same thing but the materials are sometimes inferior or superior and the result is as you've found a big deal.

I don't have a set up with the large ballast. I use an artist's lamp from Ott-lite. They are about $45 for the looped tub. I haven't seen any changes in eating around here since I started using it consistently. [well we have had molting issues this winter but it probably isn't the bulb's fault].
~ my light is OK - I think it is a bit harsh - I use it to paint by & really like how it has improved my colour choices.

Really happy to hear the positive things that proper lighting can bring about - even in birds who are perhaps set in their ways. You must feel pretty good. Hope the good changes keep coming.

Karen, were the old tubes the Philips ones? Mine are getting to be due for a change-out, I just might make a switch. I'm very impressed with your review. Though I have to think that your loving care has something to do with their improvement as well!

Nate, yes, I did use the Phillips ones. Mine didn't need changing as I had just purchased new tubes a few months ago, but I really wanted to try this type. I can't say enough good about them. I'll be awaiting your review to see what you think of them. I really think anyone that tries them is going to be impressed by the changes they see.

Your story is pretty much the norm. Some birds react immediately, others take a few weeks for patterning to change. Improved weight and good lab values are pretty common also for those birds that have had issues with this in the past.

For mine, the eating problem was with things that were red or green. When first introduced to the lights last year, this changed. Much less food waste--and a lot less squawking!

If you write directly to Ott, they will inform you that their product is not appropriate for birds, and to consult a veterinarian for suggestions. It is designed for human visual acuity, and the extra blue light that it produces can cause feathering problems. I have yet to hear anyone except those who kept birds in a really dark area tell of any real change for the good when using them.

The balance of the light coming from them gives your bird a really skewed color balance--sort of like what you see when you take a picture in a room lit by cool white fluorescents.

It's just a real shame that those who resell various light solutions are not as honest or knowledgeable as the manufacturers who make them...
