Default My new Lovies

I got a call from my MIL yesterday afternoon asking if I wanted two Lovebirds.
Of course I said....YES! She told me the girl at the petshop gave them to her because they were both injured.

One had a small spot of feathers plucked from his head. Upon further inspection after I got them out and in their cage I noticed he was missing more feathers than just on his head.

The other one apparently flew into fly paper and sustained an injury to his left wing, and my MIL was told that the shop was washing it and applying Neosporin.

Well Ive been talking to Arty about the injury, because after I saw it close up last night I was worried. I actually didnt sleep very well last night. He wasnt acting stressed out and he was eating and playing and could fly.

Tonite when my husband came home we gave him a nice warm bath and I about passed out! There was a huge chunck of gunk that came off. The petshop obviously was not cleaning his wound, poor lil thing!

After his bath, I wrapped him up and there he laid under my chin and fell alseep.

I feel SO much better now (Thanks Arty!!)

I really dont know all that much about Lovies, female/male ect.
Here is a pic of them. Petrie is the one with the wing injury is on the left in the photo!!

Your very welcomed Jenn,
It looks like its molt time or the little one on the right could be a female as the male will peck at the female head to encourage mating, there's many things that could be happening but I see a feather issue.
Do these birds enjoy to bathe?
A misting or maybe a large bowl of water?
They sure are pretty.
As we spoke we eliminated the wing being dislocated or broken, this is very good.
I asked you to wash the wing, you were able to see the issue more clearly, "Great Job", by both you and your mate.
The wounds are cleaned, as I mentioned I use Dawn dish soap here and rinse very well.
You now see the problem, keep applying Neosporin, to cover the entire injury.
We want to see scabbing, "the healing process", the sooner the better.
Your little friend may pick at the wound, keep an eye on him/her.
If needed add neosporin daily, If the wound continues to appear clean and healing with no irritation, (reddening) (discoloration) I would not wash anymore and continue applying Neosporin (lightly).
The wound also needs air, so apply the neosporin lightly.
Please understand, I am not a Vet, I have taken many classes and treat the birds that come to me myself, if the injury is determined to "not heal properly" I take the little one to our vet.
You are doing a great job, My hat is off to you and your mate.
Keep a close eye on the wound, if you see the wound is not healing properly, set up a vet appointment.
Please keep us informed.

Arty

My wife and I keep this product on hand.
Bird antibiotic for pet birds
We treat injured birds with this mild biotic to assist in warding off any infections that may have already occurred from the injury.
We also follow up after treating the bird with this biotic using a multi vitamin high in B12.
This is what we do here, its up to you (the reader) to decide if this will work for you.
Always consult your avian vet, here in our home we are trained to address many issues.
When visiting your Vet, ( a good vet will ask you to come into the exam room depending on the case), ask to go in to watch the exam, ask questions, learn all you can.
Our vet teaches us how to do this and that, please keep in mind, we see to the needs of many, many birds here, our vet knows this, and learns us all she can to help us deter such high vet bills.
Keep medications in your first aid box, learn all you can to address (minor injuries).
Become good friends with your Vet.
Remember, "your little friend come first".
Good luck and a sincere wish for Peace.
Arty & Rose

Thanks SO much Arty!

He is doing well. I keep applying the Neo and he is more active, but that could also be because I had just got him!

Not sure the TRUE story on these 2 and now I am wondering if they were just surrendered the day my MIL saw them. According to the petshop gal, the one missing the feathers on her head was being attacked by a different lovie.

I guess Ill never know the real truth, all I can do is love them up

(Im going to get the biotic and the b12) How long should I give him the b12?

We offer the Multi vitamin for 10 days.
It will be important to change the water daily when offering either a Biotic or a Vitamin.
I find it sad when folks keep birds together that shouldn't be kept together such as 2 males, this depends upon how close quartered
the birds are kept, but in most cases males will fight to control there right to breeding, (only the strong will survive).
Some birds enjoy a good misting, some enjoy a nice sized bowl of water to bathe in, Bathing will be important to keep your birds feathers in good shape along with a good diet.
The feather issues you are dealing with will change for the better over time.
It maybe a good idea to have them sexed, as long as there is no fighting all should be fine, having them sexed will offer you peace of mind and give you a heads up to what can occur in the future.
Those 2 little ones sure are pretty Jenn.
Thank you for (not saying No) and being willing to help them.
Wounded birds can break ones heart, I sense you are willing to do all there is to be done to try and help those birds, please keep up the good work and thank your mate for me.
All should be fine under your care.
Arty

Cute little buggers!!!! I hope you have them quarantined from any other birds. I always recommend PBFD testing in Lovies, particularly if there is any feather issues. Been there, done that, have that shirt,it's a road you don't want to go down.

Would that be the shirt you stripped out of yesterday!
Sorry, I know it must have been terrifying but now that all is well it's too hard to resist!
