Default Okra and Pomegranate Fruit

I am not a big one for making recipes... at most, I make gloop, which I also eat But I want to share the two natural foods that my birds will always eat with gusto, from the 'little' rosebreasted too to the big macaws. Okra and pomegranate fruits! Rosa, my too, will never look at a blueberry, I need to cut her grape in two pieces, but the pomegranate fruit wins hands down, same with the macaws, they eat every last one. Same with okra, it's the one vegetable they eat down to the last one, even the green part. This has been, to me, a relatively recent revelation, especially the okra.

That is interesting about Okra, never thought about offering it to my birds since we don't eat it much ourselves, but Okra is a good source of vitamin C and A, also B complex vitamins, iron and calcium. I am going to offer it to them.

No, actually, I cook it for myself, being the only one in my family who loves okra. I crush a few garlics, cook them in olive oil in the skillet, throw on the okra when the oil is hot and sear it all around for about a minute. Then I slice few of them for each macaw, and Rosa gets one or two, also sliced. I will sometimes throw a few slices of cooked sweet potato or hot peppers into the pan. I am so used to half or more of their served broccoli on the floor, along with the mustard greens, the dandelion, etc., so I am really impressed with the way they eat okra

Being from the south and all...Ya'll Had to know I give my birds okra. Here in the south okra is a staple food, is it not a staple everywhere????

Anywho, my birds love it. Fresh not cooked, fresh cooked, frozen uncooked, frozen cooked (it's out of season right now) and sometimes when I'm really being a bad birdy mom, I'll share my fried okra with them. Don't worry they don't get much, it's to good to share much with them....

Pomegranate fruit served over Harrison's pellets, sometimes with blueberries and/or grapes, additionally. The birds seem to like this. The pellets probably soak up the juice, which softens them too.

Fried okra - I love that, never have managed to cook it good. Would you pm or post me the recipe? Thanks!

Ollie is a pom freak. When it's in season she gets a wedge every morning. I just cut a slice off the fruit every morning, like an apple wedge. She likes to be able to hold the rind (is that what it's called??) and dig out all the seeds. Then she destroys the rind.
