Default Btm ?

Excuse me if I am ignorant but would this be a Blue throated macaw? Is this bird rare like a hy? I am not familiar with BTM. I dont think I have ever seen one advertised in south africa.

Blue throats are beautiful little macaws. They resemble a Blue & Gold but are smaller and have blueish feathers on their face and under their beak rather than the black like a Blue & Gold.

I have heard their personalities described like a blue cockatoo and I really have to agree. At least with our Oscar, he loves attention. He thrives on it and if he doesn't get it when he wants it he lets you know with his screech. He will go to anyone and is really pretty gentle although he does like to "beak" things. Our Oscar is an accomplished flier and even when clipped will take off at will and try to fly to Momma.

I have met several BTMs who were not as nice. These were babies who hadn't been socialized and an adult who was cagebound. You can turn them around with a lot of patience and work.

Here are a few of my Oscar:
As a baby

A little older:

I forgot to mention he is a master mechanic. We got a beautiful SS cage for him and he proceeded to take it apart a few days after we got him home. He would then go around and try to let all of his "friends" out to play as well. Unlocking all of the other cages when we were out. We had to get him a different cage with more secure feeder doors. He unscrewed all of the bolts in the other cage with his tongue.

thank you Oscar is beautiful (if you allowed to say that about a boy)

The Blue-throated Macaw (Ara glaucogularis) is one of the rarest birds in the world. Recent estimates put the wild population in the range of several dozen birds and captive estimates are in the range of several hundred to the low thousands (Hesse and Duffield 2000). Although the Blue-throats appear to be like many other macaws specializing on one or two species of palm for food and nesting requirements, it was apparently not this habitat specialisation that drove them to the brink of extinction. A great deal of their habitat still exists and is highly compatible with cattle ranching in central Bolivia.

I found this on world parrot trust and was just wondering although yours is a different colour.

I have just realised something while surfing. In South Africa they are Canide although not in the pet trade only for breeding, I guess too few in the country.

Here is a picture of our Mango a Caninde macaw. He is very mechanical and can take anything apart!

What have you come up with to hang toys in his cage. Seems good old Oscar can get just about anything we try right off .

I put new wood blocks in every morning, they hang on a stainless spiral that we got from Motherplucking bird toys. Mango destroys the blocks on the spiral every day, a game between between the two of us.

Mago lives with a Severe named Kashi.

We hook all of our birds toys to the top of the cages with stainless steel karabiners. The kind climbers hook to their ropes. We also use these on doors for easy opening for us, but nearly impossible for our FIDs.
