Cockies fall prey to spire squadron
Melbourne’s Arts Centre spire is under attack from a small but persistent flock of sulphur-crested cockatoos, but a group of trained raptors may be the landmark’s saviour.
The cockatoos have taken a shine to the 30,000 tiny lights that illuminate the St Kilda Road spire, pecking and dislodging the globes, which cost $1 each, as well as the light fittings, causing them to fall to the ground. So far $70,000 of damage has been done to the spire.
But now the Arts Centre is testing an innovative solution that, if successful, will save both spire and cockatoo.
