Default Quinoa

So I checked out the link Karen provided (Thank you all so much for your support through this, you have no idea how thankful I am for it!) and was reading about the different no-no foods and foods that might help, etc. I feed Lucy a lot of grain foods (like in breads) and wanted to find some sort of 'grain' that would be really good for her. Then I remembered an article in BT about Quinoa.

So I looked through my pantry and found it (lol) and made up one of the recipes that was provided. Its actually a really interesting like of 'grain'. Its not a legume, but not like gluten grains either. Its actually really good tasting and I'm hoping the fids like it. So, I just thought I would share

Good luck with it Dominique. I hope Lucy approves. I think Quinoa (pronounced keen-wa) is great. It does contain more protein than any of the other grains, so be careful to not over-do with the birds heading into breeding season. If I'm not mistaken I think Quinoa was the grain that sprouted for me over night! So you may want to try sprouting it also.

Its definatly a great grain for sprouting. Even while you're cooking them, you can see them sprouting! Today I also bought The Healthy Parrot Cookbook (A Lifesaving Nutritional Guide and Recipe Collection). I'm going to start cooking stuff tonight.

Once again, thank you Karen for your amazing wisdom- you've helped me so much!

Thank you Dominique. It's nice that we can all help and learn from each other.

Have you tried any of the Avian Naturals products? Avian Naturals and Parrots on the Porch is where I do most my online food shopping. They both have some great products. AN has a dry Parrot Cage mix called Sammy's~"Just Say No"~House Select Blend! ~ (formally named Allergy).

Jun, you should be able to get it at any health food store or in the specialty/organic section of a large supermarket.

Jun,

Its becomming much more popular. I've yet to see it at Kroger's or Publix, but pretty much any health food store should have it available.

Quinoa is a favorite of Sophie's. Not only does it cook well, its good raw (I mix it with millet) and sprouted!!
