Talking I want a lorikeet

OK. I have two really important questions. The first one is what size cage should just one lorikeet be put in? The second one is where in the south east part of Michigan or the north east part of Ohio can I purchase one of these awesome little bundles of joy? I have one more thing, if you can tell me anything about lorikeets OTHER THAN the basics of toys, food, messes, size of the bird that would be nice. The things of interest is the cages, covers of cages for the bottom for messes, this food powder stuff, and the personalitlies in general this would benefit me. I was thinking about getting one sometime in june or july. You can right on here or email me on dodgeman0076@yahoo.com

Hello and welcome to PC!!!!!

I have a rainbow Lory and she is an amazing bird.

I'm on my way out the door and promise to be back later with links and suggestions, although I am by no means a Lory expert.

Real quick as far as the cage goes.... BIGGER IS BETTER.

They are small birds but have an energy level like no other. So, the rule of thumb is the biggest you can provide. I'll get back to you later with the minimum cage reqs. I suggest a "normal shaped" cage. Meaning none of the ones that are shaped like a house or a castle or something because they are messy birds and you want something that will be "easy" to clean.

anyways... sorry, but I'm typing fast here.... I'll be back later on...

again, WELCOME!

To the person in NY I believe. What a beautiful blue and gold in the picture. That is what my husband wants but I want a lorikeet plus we wouldnt have that kind of room. lol Our friends have a blue and gold (gracie) and they have a scarlet (gabby). My husband and gracie have one heck of a bond. They actually offered her to us but, we just simply dont have room for that big of cage right now. Plus I want to start out with a smaller bird so I can get used to it. I am sort of scared of the larger ones. (beak) right now lol we have a lot of animals. They are so spoiled. Why I say we are planing to get a lorikeet in june or july maybe later is because we have to get two cages built for our two iguanas first. This is so we can put a bird in our room so our cat oreo wont be tempted. She wouldnt hurt a fly on purpose she is just a playfull little thing. We also have a dog squirt and a fish (parona I dont know how to spell it) named fishy fishy because we dont know if its male of female. I am looking ahead for a bird. maybe one day we will build onto our house and get a blue and gold. Oh and there is two other animals I want when we build on lol. A ferret and a bearded dragon. My husband always says when people ask him if he has any kids and he says yea we have five of them lol (Iggy, Lizzy, Oreo, Squirt, and fishy fishy)

Hi and welcome! Lory's are great but they are like having a 2 year old who just ate an entire bag or candy and washed it all down with a 2 litter bottle of soda, with some cake for desert! To add to the bigger is better simple cage suggestion of Josh's, it is also very important to avoid cages with and scrolling or decorative metal work. They love to play and can easily get caught up in fancy metal work an be injured as a result.

Welcome Dodgeman!

You sound like you're in the same area as me - SE MI / NW Ohio. I'm not sure of lori breeders around here, but I did see a Rainbow lorikeet at the Anderson's in Toledo, OH about a year ago. They may know of a breeder. I was just in there this past weekend and they did not have any lories.

I'll keep my eyes and ears open for them in my area, but I haven't seen one (at the pet stores at least) in quite awhile.

Since you have some time to really research birds, I suggest researching various types of parrots and maybe another species will catch your eye. Take a look around all of the various forums here and you'll find tons of information and pictures of wonderful birds.

Yes Lory's are alot of fun, I own two of them, BUT be ready for a serious mess with these guys,They have a 4 foot projectile with their poop, and let me tell you it is sticky and hard to get off some places,They do love to play and clown around.
Please make sure you do your research on them before getting one,as their diet needs are very different to other birds ,and they have to have their nector.

I know all about feeding needs lol. My iguanas are a handfull. They have very specialized needs too. If you dont get the right amount of things in their diet they could develop metabolic bone disease. Not only that in order to make sure they dont get something you must check their poop on a regular basis. There are three colors to watch for and if one is missing they are missing something in their diet. So trust me I am quit used to fancy diets for animals. I have a food chopper that helps me cut up their food. They cant just live on dry food, they must have well many of the same things as lorikeets eat. Lot of fruits and veggies. More so veggies with iguanas than with lorikeets and with lorikeets fruit seems to be what they need more. They all have to be prepared for them daily. It is a chore but, they are worth it. I love animals, my goal is to one day be a dog groomer. I just want to work with animals.

I next to Ann Arbor. What is the moderator and senior Memeber stuff on here? I have really researched them alot and I have considered other options such as amazons, nanday conures and parrolettes. But, for some reason I have really fallen inlove with the lorikeets. I dont know why but, they seem to be just purfect so far for what I am looking for. I dont mind mess or the hyperness lol. In some ways I think the hyperness is a good thing. I get burst of energy all the time and it would be nice to be around another animal like me lol.
