Default Fiona has feathers!!

When I took the pictures in April, Fiona was barbered and plucked. I was hoping a good diet and a bunch of shredding toys would help. It did but not a lot-then in Sept (when I decided to formally adopt both Shrek and Fiona) she stopped. By the holiday photo, she was growing some feathers and these were taken last week! Keeping fingers crossed that she has so many things to shred in her cage that she has no time for feathers. I also make sure she has access to a little cereal bowl in her cage for a bath or a pie plate on the porch so she has been using one or the other almost everyday. I also put a little aloe in the water. Ta-da-my beautiful Fiona!

The first two pics are from last Spring:

These are from last week:

I fostered both Shrek, the Quaker and Fiona, the Maroon bellied Conure, for FWCAS after they were dropped off at the pound when their people decided to retire to Mexico and couldn't take them. They were both 20 yrs old and had been raised together, in separate, inappropriate sized cages. The shelter didn't even get their names, just a jar of economy-size Wal-mart bird food, full of sunflower seeds!

I don't think they were physically abused but definitely neglected and hadn't been out of the cage in quite some time, needed nail clipping and Fiona needed vet attention for her nare that had been ignored for years. They probably just had the food and water and paper changed and that's it. The cages they came in looked 20 yrs old and rusty with 1 old toy each in them. I think the family's kids grew up and moved out and the parents were stuck with the birds and didn't do much with them.

There lives changed dramatically with me.

Thanks for everyone's kind words-it has been a pleasure to watch her change over the months. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this continues.
