Default Fostering a Cockatiel

Hi Guys,

I'm a volunteer for Wings of Hope and I'm going to be fostering a 3 year old cockatiel. She's coming from a home that doesn't have the time to spend with her. I did have a cockatiel growing up but it was a LONG time ago. So I was wondering if anyone could give me some tips as far as favorite foods, favorite toys, anything at all. I want to do my best to cheer this girl up before she goes to her new home.

Thanks so much!

Wendy, first let me say how awsome!!!!

Thank you for helping this little girl. You have a good heart!!!

As far as favorite things, I can tell you about mt Twitch. He loves millet as a treat and mushy stuff like oatmeal type stuff. He also loves nutriberries. He likes leafy green vegies, butr mailnly to bath in and rip them up.

With toys, he loves anything he can rip apart and shred. The softer wood, like balsa, chinese finger traps, that shredable paper I weave in the bars.. He also likes things with rope he can preen. He beats up bells like a little boxer with a punching bag. He also likes things he can swing on.

I hope that helps a little.

Josh, thank you so much! Yes, this is a big help! I'm used to bigger birds, as you know, so I want to make sure she has the right things to keep her happy. Her name is Sophia and from what I've heard about her she's very lonely. I will do my best to cheer her up.

I'm looking forward to fostering this little girl. I'm picking her up Saturday, I'll keep you posted.

Thanks again Josh!

Hi there Wendy! You are a good egg for helping this baby! I had a precious cockatiel several years ago and she loved to shred a paper towel better than anything and like Josh said she loved to bathe in fresh greens dripping with water. She would eat a little of them but mainly she just flapped and flapped!!

Thanks for helping this little girl out!

I echo what Josh said - my Lulu is a chewer and shredder with balsa wood and chinese finger traps being her favorite things. Also thin pieces of wood, like popsicle stick-thin. She'll sometimes demolish toys in an hour.

Her favorite foods are Nutriberries, Avicakes, green peas, black eyed peas, corn, broccoli, birdie bread, and cooked brown rice. She's a great eater. She loves showers too, she has a shower perch and comes in the shower with us.

OK, do you guys mean something like wet lettuce? She will eat it and roll around in it? If this is the case, I will love that!

You are all so great, thanks so much for you help. I just want this little girl to be happy, and then get her into her home where she will be loved.

Kale, Spinich, leafy greens like that. I make sure its wet, then either hang hang them in the bars, or from the top, or in a dish. He will roll and rub in it and then shred it up.

Dakota absolutely loves bells. He also loves to shred paper- I attach an old paperback book to the outside of his cage so that the pages stick through the cage bars. One book will last weeks, and he has a blast chewing it to death. He also loves showers.
