in the past few months, i have heard several stories of fires sparking inside households with multiple birds and owners coming home to a dead flock. not from flames, but from smoke inhalation. the thought of this shatters my heart into a million pieces, as i think it would anyone graced by the presence of these amazing creatures.

fire prevention is very important to everyone, but to us especially as the caretakers of birds. birds have very sensitive lungs and can die so fast from smoke inhalation.

i think we should start a collection of fire prevention tips, safety, and escape plans.

Install smoke detectors and check the batteries monthly. I also have a smoke detector linked to ADT security services, so the fire department is immediately notified.

Excellent idea Emily.

A very important thing to do in a smoke filled room is to stay low (below the smoke). Gather your bird and crawl out of the area. Get to a fresh air source as soon as possible. Follow up with emergency care immediately. Don't wait for clinical problems to surface!

Monitoring and treatment for smoke inhalation should continue for several weeks post smoke exposure which among other treatments would include Oxygen and a Nebulized Saline to moisturize the passage ways.

We love Emily!! I worry about fire alot. We are also connected to the fire dept. by our alarm system. I never leave with the dryer, dishwasher, etc. running. I've also told my neighbors if they have to drive their car thru my house to get in and save Ruby - do so. I will pay to replace the car! lol

This is a very good subject!!! It's something none of us think could happen to us, but unfortunetly it can. Making a plan and having an emergency kit it oh so important not just for us but for all of our fids and other pets. Thanks oodles Emily for post such an important post.
