Default Open your trap!

Does anyone have any tips on how to get something out of a macaws mouth that they don't want to give up? Things like diamond earrings, or upholstery tacks they stole out of the chair? Not that Ruby would do anything like that, of course!

Kady is excellent at the game of Keep-Away!

The only way I've been able to accomplish that feat is to and offer a trade to him to get him to drop the item I didn't want him to have.

Some will let me pry it right out of their beak, others I have to try and trade them something they really like. Yesterday Piaui had a toy hook in his beak, thankfully all I had to do was pick him up and he let me take it.

Oh my! Maybe if I came up there he would give me the earring. Does he do rings too? Money?

LOL, Susan!

Around here, we trade shiny and/or dangerous things for snackies or bits of bird-safe leather, or some other coveted toy.

HA, i have to rip things out of ivy's mouth all the time. she is lightning fast grabbing things she isn't supposed to have. if i am as fast as her, i can pry the object out of her mouth before she clamps down. but otherwise i have to catch her off guard and yank it out.

Ollie lets me dig through her mouth to remove things. I think she thinks its a game. The trading thing sounds like it would work though!

Suns are not macaws but still can be difficult, they go after tiny beads. I have to trade as I worry they swallow it. Keys from the keyboard can be taken out, mostly Peanut just drops it and hurries to get another.

I have to scare something out of Eves mouth! When I try the Trade Idea, Eve conveniently hides the off limits item in the bottom of his beak like a pelican! And takes the new item as well! Greedy bird! So I clap my hands once but as loud as I can, and He drops the item.
