Default Advice Please, Ollie's foot

I've attached 2 photos, one of each foot.

I noticed this a week or 2 ago and was just now able to get a decent photo. I also thought (and prayed) that maybe it would go away (fat chance). She doesn't seem to be favoring it at all. I've also never seen her picking at it. She's acting completely normal, and hasn't lost any weight.

I can't for the life of me figure out what could have caused this. I've checked for a tiny piece of string or hair that may be wrapped around there, but I can't find anything. I thought maybe it was from her Sandyperch, but she's had one for years and has never had any problems. Also, she has numerous other types of perches, plus, it's just the one foot. I don't use lotion or perfume.

Ideas?? What should I do?

Ollie has never had any injuries thus far, and I always thought I would be prepared and know exactly what to do when something happened. Turns out I'm so worried sick that I can't even think straight.

Camille, clueless as to what might have caused it, but you might use Neosporin and see if it starts to heal.

This is a long shot, but how do you heat your home? Most furnaces remove moisture from the air while heating it. Oliana's foot almost looks like dry skin that has cracked. Amber and I both have sensitive skin, and during the winter we have to keep a close eye on the humidity level in our house. I have read that birds do very well at around 45%-50% humidity. Again this is just a guess, hope it helps. Keep us posted.

Of course an Aloe plant will be great as well.

I think the apartment complex uses furnaces. I use a space heater in Ollie's room to keep the temp up. It is rather dry in my room not sure what the percent humidity is- I need to get a little gadget that will tell me. I guess I'm just wondering why it's just the one foot? However, I agree, it does look like it might be cracked, dry skin.

I'm going to put some Aloe on it tomorrow from my aloe plant. I think I just have Neosporin ointment, I'll pick up some cream tomorrow.

Dry skin is my first guess as well. In your winter climate, if you're not adding humidity its bound to be quite dry. Not as bad as here, but still you've had pretty cold weather. You guys have been traveling and moving around quite a bit, between the power outage and the holidays too, right? Lots of varying conditions. Aloe and Neosporin should help a lot. I wonder if it might be a good idea to take the sandy perch out temporarily?

I agree with what Nate says. I was noticing Cleo's feet last nite. She loves to have her feet rubbed! They're not too dry. She has a sandy perch as well, but I don't see any cracks like that on there.
Do you have an avian vet near???

It does look like dry skin that caused a crack, just like us when our hands dry out they tend to crack. do you have cement perches at all in his cage? If so remove them, they do cause problems at times with their feet, sores etc...
Just try to keep that area on the foot moist, with some aloe or neosporin.

The yellowish edges to the wound had me on alert.
I hate to get personal here ... but my feet can look a bit like that [but 5 toes & pink ] - this morning there was blood on the bathroom floor & I was too sleepy to think clearly & then I noticed a crack - & no it wasn't too painful or I would have reacted quicker - don't want to be too dramatic.

My personal issues are yeast. The holidays are bad for me with all the sweets & things with white flour & stresses. The yeast comes out on my fingers & feet & in my son & step-son's cases they get raised rashes on their bodies. I think this all came about from years of overdoing the sweets.

If Ollie has a yeast infection you probably should see a vet. But I would recommend a detox anyways. It could be more internal than external - is what I'm getting at. Stress can really enhance a condition like that. More sleep - lots of water - quiet - no pasta or bread & less sweet foods like apple etc. This can take about 3 months to right if you're diligent - if its yeast.

Grape Seed Extract is a great one for yeast as well. Olive oil on the skin is OK. I use other creams but for Ollie I'd stick to Olive oil. Yeast is both internal & external & has to be stopped both at once. To reduce cracks - i soak my feet with sea salt & Apple cider vinegar [although because of the yeast some doctors are against the vinegar]. But maybe review the Apple cider Vinegar articles.

Hope this helps in the long run.

Poor Ollie - i was quite distressed by the photos - what a sweet girl.
