Default Chipmonks anyone?

i need some help, i got a chipmonk from a local petshop last week, he was very cold and not well at all, so ive kept him in a small carrier with a heat mat under it for warmth, hed get better and get worse again and he has lost ALOT of weight so i brought him to the vet today.

i had an idea he had the flu, but the vet reckons because he was imported from germany a few days before i got him and the stress of that made him get the flu, the vet is also worried its fatal, gave me baytril for him but i want to know is there anything else i can do ro give him to help him along

Perhaps some Pedialyte to help keep him hydrated? Sounds like you're doing all the right things, Jayne. Is he eating at all, and what are you feeding him? How old is he, old enough to be eating seeds and such? If so, some hulled sunflower seeds (so he doesn't have to work to open them) might provide an energy boost.

yeah thanks nate i dont know his age at all, wouldnt even guess it, i have been giving him 1ml dioralyte (the irish version of pedialyte) for the last few days twice a day so its helping, he is on a chinchilla mix food, as its the only one i could get at the time and dog food, your a mind reader though because i bought some shelled sunflower seeds and peanuts to try boost him a bit, seems to be taking to them. im going to try get peanut butter tomorrow see what he will think of it hopefully he will start gaining weight now

i havent a clue what age he is ,like i said he was imported so i haven't a notion. he does roll over to get his belly scratched tho lol nice wee friendly thing

Sounds good, Jayne. Like I said, it seems like you're doing all the right things. Only time will tell, I guess. Hopefully Arty will see this and chime in, I know he's had lots of experience with baby squirrels and such. I hope the little feller gets better!

Reading your words tell me you are doing all you can do.
Is the baytrl being injected or added to the water?
It will be important to get the proper amount (dosage) into the little one at one time for the meds to be efective.
Is the little one eating on his own?
The heat is important, be sure to allow a area for the little one to get off the heat if needed.
I just woke up and have to leave for work, I pray all goes well.
Please know you are doing all you can and lets pray the meds take hold and help this little one.
The baytril will only help if the proper dosage is given as a whole.
Prays to the both of you, I will check in as soon as I get home from work and try and help more.
Peace
Arty

thanks for the reply Arty, i was afraid to use injectable baytril, i have a bottle for the reptiles here, so the vet gave me the oral, directions are .2mls in 10mls of water and syringe about 1-2mls twice a day and leave the rest in his water bowl cleaning it out every day, that way im sure im getting enough into him

Honestly I can't believe a vet would recomend Baytril left in the water to stand, this may and can harm the little one.
Injecting is fairly easy, but I do remember my first time and yes it was fairly scary so I understand your words of concern.
You are doing all that you can, keep the little one warm and lets all pray for the better.
Offer seeds and nuts hirh in protien and fats, shelled peanuts (un-salted) and as others have mentioned sunflower or other seeds with high fats.
Please change the water daily and if possible a Gatoraid or ringers solution for dehydration, a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar mixed in the water.
Good luck to you and your little friend.
please give us an update when possible.
Peace
Arty
