Default Feeding Ferals in the City

Maybe it isn't the brightest move - considering the video we saw on city Pigeon management - but around here we're in the dark ages, in that way. Every day at least someone feeds these guys & the other 2 flocks around the block. We live in an area full of high rises.

I gave them some cracked corn & seeds & Budgie leftovers today. Here is what the bunch looked like after my husband fed them on Saturday.

They're the 's' shaped line in the small park beside the parking lot. They used to hang out near the bridge [upper Right corner] on the pavement but when the city was working on the bridge they brought bags of seed every day & fed them in the parkette. Now that's where they like to hang out & it is a lot nicer & safer for them.

I always feel bad for the pigeons and wildlife in the cold, I am glad they are getting fed!

Many thanks to those with kind hearts, the Pigeon is a resorceful bird, I have heard of folks training them to eat elsewhere.
One person spent about a two week time period but managed to get a flock of ferals to come from under a highway bridge to his back yard to feed.
Thank you for all you are doing to help the bird of peace, I can only pray things change for them, they really mean us no harm.

Default Jan 1st - feeding them has become a habit

I thought I'd post a series of my husband feeding the Pigeons. It was been snowing really heavily since early this morning. The shots aren't great - I could have stood on the balcony but I didn't!

It's hard to see but they're all in the snow .... then you can see Matthew walking towards them.

He was clearing a flat area for them with his boots so they can get all the food. It's so cute how they all line up [like when I used to feed the chickens at the farm]. Matthew said they were really sweet - some were pretty scruffy but they all had their tails in the air.

Please thank Matthew for me, you really have no idea just how much this has meant to me, you are the reason I continue to believe there is hope and where there's hope one can find salvation.
They thank you Matthew, they thank you so very much!
I really don't wish to ask more from you, but if possible maybe, could you please maybe take some water and a bowl for them to get much needed fluid.
You will be amazed with the number that will drink.
This trully warms my heart, you both are such kind people.

Peace

Arty

I've been wondering about the water thing - but I was worried it would freese or tip over .....
- they will drink the worst stuff around here - however there is a river a block away where the local ducks winter - I hope they use that too.

I'll give it some thought - see if i have a proper bowl that can sit in the snow. I remember what you said about the water being about 2" deep.
Matthew just said we'd try ... & he appreciated the sentiments. We'll feed them later today & take some water.

You, & our Budgies as well, have been a real trip into the world of all birds. Our eyes are more open than they were.

You need not leave the bowl of water there to freeze.
Simply a small bowl deep enough and maybe a plastic gallon jug filled with water, as you enjoy feeding them, enjoy watching them drink, when you are done with your visit, empty the bowl and bring it home with you for further use.
You are correct, they do need to drink, and if there thirst is great enough, they will drink anything...anything, very sad, but very true.
Again I do not wish to ask more from your other half, he trully is a remakable person for all he is doing for those birds, I know they thirst and I can feel the kindness within Mathews heart, I was simply hoping maybe Mathew could carry some much needed water along with him.
I thank you for your kind words, You both are very kind people, I suspect both of you would reach out to help even without my encouragement.
You both are trully wonderful human beings!
Trully

-23C this morning & windy as well!

Well yesterday & today I brought water with me ~ put it in a margarine container sunk 1/2 way in the snow. They didn't go to the water at all - even when I poured it full this morning to show them what it was - thought they might have been afraid of it yesterday. Is it too small?

I think the water idea is a good one but it might not be necessary with these guys - maybe they already have a good source. There are many high rises in our area - perhaps the top of the buildings offer some unpolluted water, once the sun heats it up? But boy is it cold today.
