Subject: sick mourning dove
Hi For the past month I’ve successfully been rehabbing a mourning dove. Im a wildlife rehabilitator. He was beginning to eat seeds on his own so I was just feeding him exact in the morning and evening. I asked another rehabilitator to care for him for 4 days because I had to go out of state for a funeral. When he was returned he was ill. His symptoms are listless fluffed feathers not eating crop feels puffy, rasping difficulty breathing. I have him on Heat, I gave him a drop of batril, and also a few drops of pedyalite. Any other suggestions. Im sick over this. If he makes it through the night Ill get him to a vet Linda
Hi Linda,
Thank you for contacting me, I will do my best to help.
That little Dove has been asperated.
I recently was called by a person with the very same
story, could this be the same person?
The stories are identical.
The heavy breathing tells me this is asperation.
I have yet to see a Dove or Pigeon survive after being
asperated.
It also could be a IMPACTED crop.
The mix has to be very runny, the crop milk from the parent is
very runny, so needs to be the mix.
Impacted Crop, there will be a need to get some cod liver oil down into the crop and gently massage.
If it is a Impacted crop then follow what I have said
above and pray the mix within the birds crop will
lossen and pass.
