Default Rehoming my girls today

Peepers, Clyde and Juliet, our female Tiels.
Cronic Egg Layers.
Are being re-homed with a very good friend of mine.
Our Babies will be the only birds in my friend house.
The issue, since I have been hand feeding babies lately, the Tiels are laying profoundly again, 12 eggs already, we are doing all we can do to replace the calcium lost from this frenzy.
Rose and I have decided to re-home our girls.
We feel this will be the best (health wise) for them.
Our girls have been with us for over 10 years.
Arty

I'm sorry Arty. Know you will miss them, but I had a cockatiel 10 years ago that also chronically laid eggs so I rehomed her with an older gentleman that adored her and she never laid an egg for him! Sometimes it is best.

Well, there gone, and yes I agree, the change will take there minds off laying.
Extremely un-healthy for them, they were even laying in there seed dish.
We also re-homed our hide a bed just to make room for the Christmas tree.
We simply don't have enough house.
I work with the person that adopted the girls, and he lives 2 miles away.
All will be fine...

So glad to hear that you will be so close to them. I'm sure you will visit often.

That egg laying can be very upsetting. My mom's Tiel Alice is a great layer.

I'm glad you found someone you can trust.

A tough decision I am sure, but sounded necessary for your girls sake. I am certain that you, Arty, will make the right decisions for your birds.

As a reference for the future, it is actually very easy to stop them from being chronic layers. All you have to do is keep them to a strict natural daylight schedule and reduce the protein and vitamin E intake during the winter. It takes a while (sometimes up to three seasons) for their endocrine system to go back in tune with the seasons and their metabolism to adjust to what it should be but once they do, they only lay during breeding season. Generally speaking, birds have three breeding triggers: length of day, food availability and temperature but temperature doesn't work with tropical birds and food availability in captivity is iffy but, thankfully, all birds are photoperiodic. Once you keep them to the natural way of things, they go back to what nature intended: breeding only during breeding season. I don't have a single chronic layer or any off-season eggcidents.

Arty, I'm sorry to hear that, although it is certainly for the best. Chronic laying, particularly in Tiels, I gather, is not always easily addressed. Often in spite of one's best efforts with diet, photo-period, etc., it often seems to take a complete change of situation to do the trick. As you said, it takes so little to set them off, like in this case where you are hand-feeding babies.

It's great that they have gone to someone you know, and close by.

Well the girls are settling into there new home, and not a single egg.
All I hear from my friend is how happy he and the girls are.
I counted 10 whole eggs and 4 broken eggs, In a matter of 2 weeks time.
We have been dealing with this issue for many years, finally we moved the girls down stairs in cooler climate, just them and the Parakeets, then I began bringing babies into the room to hand feed, then we moved our Male BF Amazon down into that room and the girls went crazy laying eggs.
We tried meds, suplimenting there calcium, you wouldn't believe what we went through to re-gain control.
The girls health was failing, we had to do something, its very hard coming to a decission to re-home, the girls were with us for very close to 10 years.
I am very sad, but plan on paying them a visit real soon.
Arty
