#6 | | | Re: New Member (Roxy) Hey all, Thanks Arty for the intro, it was not expected! To be brief, how Arty and I met, I found a pigeon in the road, young and hungry and a bit on the wild side, never the less I kept him at my grooming shop for a little over a month...even though he wasn't tame he seemed to warm up to us a little, enough that by the time Arty and I made plans for him to pick him up, I told myself "if he doesn't show, I am keeping this grumpy guy!"...well, as it turns out Arty is a very reliable guy who shows up on time! I was a bit tearful when Boyd left (we named him) and I think Arty could sense this so he offered me the opportunity to have a pigeon that would be tame to humans...I got the OK from my hubby so we are now in the exciting planning stages of this adoption!
I have been looking at all the pics/videos & posts of all the pet pigeons on this forum and it has really got me eager to do this...I am sure I will need a lot of help from you good people!
Thanks again Arty...it was very good of you to take care of Boyd and to introduce me to the bunch. |

#8 | | | Re: New Member (Roxy) Your welcome Roxy, Thank you very much for helping Boyd, many would not do such a thing, its easier to just keep on going, those that stop to help are very special people.
Just to give folks a heads up, Roxy and I have agreed this pigeon was used for "Dog Training", as all the flights and tail feathers were hacked off.
Boyd is doing very well here in my loft, he is still adjusting and his feathers will take time to mend, but soon enough he will be flying and mated up.
Boyd is a fancy breed and simply can't be released, these birds are for (show) and should not be allowed to fly freely as there flying abilities are not so good and they will fall to a preditor very quickly.
I have 2 new babies in the loft, Racers, a pure white and a blue bar have mated up, by the time I figured out what was happening the eggs had begun development so I had to allow them to mature, this mated pair were sneaky and used a corner instead of the nesting boxes, when one has crippled pigeons one will always find birds laying in corners...LOL...so this kinda threw me off.
Momma Lahore and her mate are also sitting on eggs due to hatch here real soon.
Roxy has requested a hand fed tamed Pigeon, So I have asked her what she wants, one of these Racers or one of momma Lahores babies.
These Racers layed on the bare ground (no nest), so I scambled to provide nesting material, the nest was built around the eggs, so I have to keep an eye on things to prevent (splay legs).
As everyone knows, what these birds look like when grown is a mystery, there different coloration is just amazing, as soon as Roxy lets me know what species she wants and when the time is right I will bring one baby in and begin to hand feed and tame, and as always you all can watch him/her grow here in the Pigeon & Dove Forum.
Thank You Roxy for joining us here on ParrotChatter, There are many members that call ParrotChatter "HOME", I am but one, so feel free to visit other forums and look around, there's a forum for our other pets such as dogs and cats or whatever, you are welcomed to post your work and or your shop information, we look forward to helping you as well as learn from you.
Please let me know what bird you want when you have time.
Peace
Arty

#9 | | | Re: New Member (Roxy) This is all so fun...It will be my task for the next few weeks to come up with a cage & outdoor pen for this little guy, and also learning about diet & vitamins etc...I am trying to talk my hubby into putting a hole in the garage wall into a outdoor enclosure for outside time for him/her...at this point free flying seems waaay to scary to comprehend!
Arty, I would love to see the babies as soon as they start developing their feathers/colors...are there any distinguishing differences between the racers and the lahore babies I should know to base my decision on? Color, size, temperment,etc...?
Pics of all the parents would be great...sorry but now you got me all excited..your fault!!!
Say hi to Boyd! |

#10 | | | Re: New Member (Roxy) Here's my Dunn Lahore, she is a show Pigeon and the bottom picture is her mate a pure white homing Pigeon.
Here's the babies they produce.
Mira
Mai
Gem
Bob
These birds are larger than normal, and the feathers grow down the legs but do not completely cover the claws as they are cross bred, here's a professional picture of a Dunn Lahore to give you an idea of the feathers covering the claws
The Racers, both Rescues.
Here's are some pictures of pure whites and blue bars, I have no idea what there babies will look like.
Blue Bar
Behavior issues, all I can say is this, "I have no idea"...LOL
Some of those that have adopted from me report there birds are wonderful, some say they have attitudes, I hand feed and tame them to help these birds re-gain there dignity, the adoptors actually know more than I as I either ship them out or hand them over when they are weaned, then I let time pass, then ask how things are going, this is all done so folks can see how wonderful these birds are, they are not the dirty filthy birds that most people understand them to be, this is my goal, to help these birds regain there dignity.
Right now the babies from the Racers are all fuzzy little ones, I will wait and see the colors as they emerge and hopefully take some pictures, I don't like to handle them unless I am going to bring them in to hand feed and tame.
Racing Pigeons are larger than a Feral, they a bred to be stronger/bigger and fly fast.
Sooooo Roxy, its up to you, I wish I could bring all four in and hand raise, but sadly I can't, in 2 weeks the Racing Babies will be ready to come in, I will snap some pictures and if you want one of them you'll have to decide at that time, the Dunn Lahore eggs have yet to hatch.
