Subject: Please help!!! Pigeons

Hello Arty,

My name is Meghan Coco and I work at a company called Schlumberger in
Lafayette, Louisiana. I need help placing Pigeons. Here is the
problem: In the back of the building there is a crane bay that is
open, so pigeons have made nest and live in the crane bay are. Well
due to people complaining about them our safety department needs to
get rid of them. They have tried some ways to try and make them leave
but they always come back. For example, they have tried putting an
Owl in the area that makes sounds to try and scare them away. Now
one of the men want to trap and kill them. He has given me two weeks
to try and come up with an alternate route. Please help me with
suggestions of what I can do. Either something to put out there to
make them go away or trap them and bring them some where. Please
excuse any incorrect grammar or anything I might have left out that
will help. I am in a hurry to try and find a better way. I am a huge
animal lover and do not want to see any animal hurt!!! My number is
337-230-4992 or please email me back. Thank you in advance for taking
the time to read this and help me.

Sincerely,
A desperate animal lover, Meghan

Hi Meghan
You will need to begin live trapping the birds, depending on how many there are this will take time.
Using a simple box trap with stick and string, here's a link to help you.
ptrap
When caught keep the birds safe, Pigeons rarely go more than five miles away from there birth place, to ensure there survival and assure they do not return to there former nesting spot, you will need to drive them 50 miles away, hopefully to a farm, even a grain silo somewhere is a good release point.
But the release area must be far from where they are roosting to assure they do not return.
I to am a animal lover, for over 18 years now, I have been helping the bird of Peace, better known as the Pigeon, I admire your kind intentions.
A box trap works very well, baited with wild bird seed.
Many people contact me with the same issue and many have had success with the box trap.
Good luck, let me know how it is going.

Arty, if the nests had to be removed and the areas netted off is it in their nature to re-build in the same area or move on? I also wonder if there's a food source there that is making the area welcoming.

Nettings have proven to be deadly, They are using nets in New York as a means of control and they are proving to be fatal.
The food source would be Mankind, we would have to train Mankind to never litter, these birds thrive on what mankind leaves behind, and there also has to be a source of water nearby.
Meghan hasn't described the conditions very well and as Susan has said, there's no way of knowing the numbers.
Sadly man thinks by poisoning these birds it will solve the problem, more pigeons will move in to take the place of the fallen birds.
I will e-mail Meghan again today and see just how far she will go to protect these birds, I surely would not want her to loose her job.
There are options, I will talk with Meghan and see what she wants to do.

Hi Arty,
Thank you so much for you're response. I was looking up bird netting to
put in the crane bay area to assure no birds at all can nest. Do you
think this is a good idea. Someone told me that if you do that they will
die because they will not know where to go. Is this true???? Is this
the humane way to do it? Please respond ASAP. I am going to the safety
department today with my suggestions and possibly getting an estimate
for putting up netting. Again, thank you so much for you're kindness as
well and for helping me.
Meghan

Hi Meghan,
Currently Netting is being used in New York City as a means of control, this has ups and downs, yes the nets do work however some birds become tangled in the nets and die.
As I mentioned before, Pigeons rarely go beyond five miles of there birth place, netting off there nesting grounds will encourage them to go elsewhere but not far enough to make people happy, they will remain close by, maybe not at that particular spot....but close by.
Mankind seems to think Poisoning these birds will solve the problem, this has proven to fail as more birds will take the place of the fallen birds, you might want to bring this (fact) up to the owners of the property.
The birds will move on if nets are used, will they die?, only if they become entangled in the netting, they will find other places to nest.
I pray the company doesn't resort to poisoning, this has proven to bring animal rights groups out of the closet and I can almost promise this will not be good (politically) for the company.
I also know you are strapped for time, It would help you to google (Safe Pigeon Control Methods) and do some reading.
Killing (poisoning) these birds will only bring much grief upon the company, I can not express this enough.
When these birds are poisoned, they begin to fall from the sky miles away and then the public becomes involved.
Exterminators can not gaurentee nothing but a bunch of lies, and when people begin to see the horrible way these birds die, it will be traced back to the company and all hell will break loose, this has been proven over and over again.
Best to look into the nets as a solution, I know for a fact that these nets come with ups & downs.
Good Luck!
Please keep me updated, Here's a link to a group that knows all about Netting, its free to join and would be worth your time, they also can help you with real solutions to help you save those birds.

I sent these 2 links to Meghan,

Pigeon Control Problems Resolved – DeteraPiegon safe pigeon control products

PR-GB.com... News from origin - Deter-a-Pigeon Speaks Out Against Hollywood's Pigeon Birth Control Plans

These spikes work well and will not harm any bird, depending on the conditions this could be a way to encourage the birds to go elsewhere.
