There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and sometimes it depends on the bird's personality. My birds are in the living room, both out of necessity and preference. I don't have any other room to put them in, and I like them to be where they feel they are a part of whatever is going on. Downside of that is that the birds go to bed about 7PM (depends somewhat on time of year and darkness), so the TV etc. shuts down then as well. Doesn't bother me, but it would a lot of folks. Some people use a separate smaller sleep cage in another quieter more out of the way room.
You also need to be aware of where the cage is sited in regard to drafts (bad), windows (sun can get too strong and overheat them and in general it's good for them to have at least one wall behind or beside the cage for security), traffic pattern (a nervous or cage protective bird located right next to where everyone in the house has to walk right by it all the time isn't good), and about a kazillion other things. |

Great post, as usual, Nate! I was going to mention the draft and window issues as well.
My CAG's cage is in my bedroom in my apartment. It works best for us, mainly because during the winter I can be a typical cheap college student and keep the thermostat down low while the space heater in my bedroom keeps both of us nice and toasty! I spend a lot of time in my bedroom, but when I'm in the living room Ollie has 2 gyms to play on there.
In the future I've always pictured Ollie having her very own room with trees, tons of hanging gyms, etc....but I'm really not so sure about that. I think she would much prefer being in the thick of the action. Needing 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night is something that will probably be aided by use of a sleep cage in a quiet part of the house. |

I am very excited about it! And thank you for posting that picture with the cage. It was very useful! I liked the pictures hanging next to the cage! They're very cute! If we were to get one Ekkie, what size cage would we need, and what height? Also, how high do we want the playstand? Thanks for all your help! I appreciate it! I will get the pictures in as soon as I can! | minimum 32widex23deepx46high overall height60 plus inches

#10 | | | Re: Cage location in household We sort of have a bird room - the cages reside in our den/study/computer room. The room is great in that the cages are all on inside walls, which means it's warmer for them when winter rolls around. We are in the room very often, or at least walk through it to get to adjacent rooms, so it's not like the cage area is secluded at all.
We have their playroom, however, set up mainly in the living room. Every night when they are out to play their gyms and playstations are all set up away from their cages, which makes for nice time spent away from their cages. We hang out with them in the living room, that's where the TV is, etc. Our birds are flighted and can freely fly back to their cages if they want or need, and they sometimes do.
Good luck planning and preparing for your future bird! |
