Default homemade avi cake or nutriberry

WFor those who make homemade treats like an avi cake for med sized birds, what type of seed mix do you use? I bought honey, I just need seed! I cant wait to make some!

I use Topper seeds for Chipper. She likes safflower seeds.

I use sunflower, safflower, barley and a little millet. Bigger birds can eat millet with time and patience. I make sun foot size.

Do you use honey to make it sticky? How long do you bake it and at what temp?

Leigh, you may want to consider using Molasses instead of Honey. I don't have information handy, but I believe Molasses has more benefit for the birds than Honey.

I believe that the Lafeber's Avicakes are made using molasses, but I have no idea how much you'd need or anything.

I am sorry, I don't mean to be dense or argumentative but why would anybody want to make a homemade avicake? Too much protein and too many carbs are the biggest dietary problem for captive birds that don't exercise 1% of what their bodies need so why make things worse by giving them something that is high on both? Am I missing something here?

Its my thread. My birds are well exercised and on a good diet. A little treat doesnt hurt them. Instead of making Lafebers rich with buying nutriberries I figure to make them myself. At least Ill know theres no preservatives in them. And they dont get them as a meal or even on a daily basis. Its a treat. Cant be much different then when wild birds rip sugar cane to pieces and eat that.

Leigh I have never made the homemade ones, but in my Nutriberries I see little pellets, millet, cracked corn and safflower. I don't keep them in their original packaging or I could give you all the seeds listed, sorry. Please post pics after you make these!

Thanks Karen, will do. I think Im trying it with Mega Millet. The RB2's eat that in the wild fields in Australia and Alex loves it. I also bought some all natural sugar free granola and might try a homemade granola bar for them with a little nuts and raisins, maybe cranberries.
